It was created to stop teams throwing money at things towards February / March to effectively 'buy' the title at that point in time. To a certain extent we might think it has worked. However, all it has done is create two bottle-neck situations where clubs, trying to plan for 3/4 months at a time, stockpile for potential crises. This plays into the hands of agents and players who try to engineer big moves for inflated fees due to perceived competition for this same player.

"Quick, quick, buy now. If you pay £xm NOW then I'll sign. Quick, we've only got a couple more weeks left and I know other clubs are interested...."

The transfer window should open on 1st June and close on 1st Feb. One big window that is open for over half of the year. By that stage teams could have picked up what they need when they need in the first half of the season and the last few days and weeks of the window are there for possible emergency transfers / loans. As players know that they can't eek things out to the last minute in August looking for the biggest deal (if it falls through, sulk until January when you can force a move through) - it would drive to a clearer picture of the club saying to a player 'we want you - do you want to come yes or no?'

July and the first two weeks in Jan should be plenty of time. Sky won't like it though.

A cap on players' wages would be the easiest to implement: hugely unpopular with clubs, players and agents, but for the greater good of the game's long-term sustainability.
FFP is such a shit solution as it imposes a greater limit on smaller clubs and those with rich new investors. It's essentially a way to preserve the hegemony of the 'big' clubs.

Unfortunately I can't see a cap on wages or agents fee's ever being workable. A better solution IMO would be that all clubs in the league have a spending cap (the same for every club regardless of size) and this must cover all playing expenses including staff and player wages, transfer fees, bonuses, signing on fees, agent fees, loan fees etc.

This would make they playing field even across the league, help reduce wages and have a secondary effect of making the actual clubs more profitable and stable as a smaller fixed percentage of income would be swallowed up. This would allow them to invest in better facilities, community schemes, grass roots football and cheaper tickets etc...

Just thought I'd throw a line out and see if there were any nibbles.

Am bored shitless with 'still negotiating', Palace target could be 'hijacked' news.

Sorry!! Just couldn't help myself.
