Paywall on the link

As I said, if Rudd vacates her own current unsafe seat for Soames's, the Tories may lose it next time.

Well played Jeremy and Theresa. You continued the good work from 2015 and have achieved the first stage of your destruction.

you must be glad of the extra money going into the NHS once they have set up their 10 year plan. Labour's economic policies would not only ruin the economy they don't seem to want to put as much money in. Not sure how anyone can morally vote Labour TBH

It's not "Extra money" Jez. If you and I have a bag of crisps each, yours are Tory flavour and mine are Labour flavour, if you give a few of your crisps away to friends who have many bags of crisps of their own already, and then eat bugger all of what's left in your bag, whilst I munch my entire bag, you can't tip out what you have left and tell me you have more crisps.

Best analogy ever.

In today's Times:

One senior figure in the City suggests that Mrs May, who will address The Times CEO Summit today, has so little interest in or understanding of business that she should remove the words “First Lord of the Treasury” from the letterbox at No 10 because she has given up on the job of promoting economic prosperity. The cabinet, he says, is held in contempt in many boardrooms because of the lack of seriousness at the top. “There’s a sense that it’s a bunch of amateurs in charge, that the government is run by teenagers obsessed with their own narcissistic ambitions who have no capacity to understand the world as it is rather than how they imagine it to be.”

In contrast to Labour, who with John McDonnell as shadow chancellor are “deadly serious” about shaking up the economy, the Tories are seen as “frivolous”, with no answers to the big challenges facing the country. “People are constantly amazed by just how s*** ministers are,” says this corporate source.

Maybot is so incompetent she can't even do corporate tax cuts and deregulation right. No-one likes her. Strong and stable.

As much as that is true, the idea that City bankers would vote for an alternative in Corbyn and McDonnell seems unrealistic at best.

Corporation tax rate in Germany is 30-33% (it's a mix of corporate income taxes).

If you think businesses would rather have Maybot's s*itshow simply to avoid paying more tax then you'd have to question why multinationals in Germany exist and why business owners in Germany aren't lobbying aggressively for big tax cuts.

The reality is most businesses acknowledge that in order for them to benefit from quality workforces and physical and legal infrastructure they need to pay a fair share of taxes to fund investment into education, health and infrastructure.

What you see in reality when countries lower tax rates is businesses shifting profits but not economic activity to those countries via various transfer pricing and IP wheezes. The level of corporate profits in Ireland for instance has grown at an exponentially higher rate than real wages, and much of those profits are then "exported" to foreign shareholders.

The real job and wealth creation happens in countries with strong consumer bases, stable economies, good infrastructure and educated workers. Maybot and the last 8 years of austerity is massively threatening all those things and the stupid tax cuts will do nothing to stop businesses moving their genuine operations to higher tax jurisdictions.

If you gave business the choice between more public investment and economic/political stability but higher taxes and the direct opposite I guarantee most would choose the former.

I think you'll find the Irish view is that those companies wouldn't even be there if it wasn't for their low rate, 12.5% I believe.

Its a smart move by the Irish.

I don't think May has the vision, charisma or ability to deliver what is needed in Britain. Corbyn has the vision but I doubt he has the ability to implement it either. You'd also need to be able to stand up to the powerful vested interests and their lobbyists who dominate Britain. Can't see May doing it although MacDonnell might have a go.

You've clearly ignored the part where I point out that these companies are just shifting profits and this isn't actually benefiting wages in Ireland. Furthermore OECD rules on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting will likely impact Ireland in the future and may well prevent profit shifting to such a great extent and companies have no genuine desire to actually move anything other than their brass plate to Dublin.

If you look at global living standards the top 5 countries in HDI (common living standards index) are Norway, Australia, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark.

Corporation tax rates in those countries:

Norway: 23-25%
Australia: 27.5-30%
Switzerland: 12-24%
Germany: 30-33%
Denmark: 22-25%

Income taxes

Norway: There are a number of income taxes but these can add up to close to 50%
Australia: up to 47%
Switzerland: v. complicated due to canton system but can be up to 40% (Switzerland though is a special case)
Germany: up to 50.5% but has a sliding scale from 19.5% (so more increments than the UK)
Denmark: up to 56.5%

UK is down in 16th. Ireland is 8th. Ireland has lower per capita income than all of the above save Australia. So basically the countries that have higher corporate and income taxes are richer and have better standards of living.

There is no reliable evidence that lower corporation tax rates do anything other than increase wealth of shareholders and reduce tax take.

Incidentally the UK's gross national income per capita is significantly lower than all of those countries and lower than the Netherlands, Canad and Sweden which are all above us in the Index. Interestingly France have higher Income per capita and higher life expectancy but are below us in the table thanks to lower average levels of qualifications. So they go to school less but produce more (in less time) and live longer.
