I find myself increasingly cynical about these charges...is it really about pollution or more to do with raising revenue?

It wasn’t that long ago we were told that ending lead in petrol and then catalytic converters would solve the issues with car pollution.

And only recently govt were encouraging us to buy new diesels, and I have one!

Meanwhile another runway is likely at Heathrow, with an increase in air traffic over London.

The whole issue of additional taxes to use London's roads is shameful. Taxing the poor from the road is a dreadful policy. I can't believe it was Ken Livingstone that cleared the roads for the rich.

If vehicles need banning, ban them for everyone. Don't make using them artificially expensive to remove the poor from the road.

Go to Wavy Line or Mace then.

I really get the imposition on poorer people. Perhaps if they had disposable income through getting a decent wage for their toils ,they could buy a less polluting car.
Should be support to help people change over to a less polluting car.

It'd help if the current situation with railway services into or through London wasn't such a national disgrace.

Something does need to be done to reduce pollution in the capital. If the figures are accurate, 9000 deaths a year should mean it's a priority.

No idea what Wavy Line or Mace is.

Love the timing of the announcement. The day after the third runway at Heathrow is approved by the Govt.

The point some of us are making is the hypocrisy of taxing Londoners and working people, whilst also supporting another runway of polluting planes. Many of which just use Heathrow as a hub, so the passengers don’t even leave the terminal.

It some cases it’ll be cheaper to fly to the continent for the weekend than to drive your car into London....but which one will actually have the worst carbon footprint and consequences for environmental pollution?

I knew about this in Spain ages ago. But it gives you a chance to have a pop at one of your fave targets.

Doesn’t that say quite explicitly that any motorbikes that are exempt from the congestion charge are exempt from the pollution charge?
