Good research, and interesting, but aren't Sutton United and thus Keiran Cadogan in the National Premier?

Matt Parsons, forgot about him, he seemed pretty good didn’t he? Amazing how promising players like that end up so far down the ladder.

Great thread Woosie.

Cadogan is the one that surprised me. Looked like he had the goods to succeed. Remember that Leicester first game of the season when him and Wilf both started. Thought Kieran had as much chance of making a mark as Wilf did. Their careers couldn’t have gone in bigger directions.

Think I saw Cadogan’s final start for us too, up at Blackpool in the FA Cup. Really impressed me that day and couldn’t understand why Dougie wasn’t picking him in the league. Just goes to show you, there’s a lot more that determines success than just mere ability.

Back in the 80’s, I regularly played alongside and against 3 players right through childhood that ended up being signed at apprenticeship level at the Palace. One of them was head and shoulders better than the others, and I had no doubt he’d make it. Unfortunately he didn’t, and drifted off into an amateur career.

The only one that did make it of the three was a certain Dean Gordon. He was a midfielder back in those days, and although he clearly stood out from the rest of us, he could be rather erratic and i wouldn’t have said he’d go on to have the career he did.

Retired. Forged a half decent career for himself in the end.

Makes you realise how many kids we got to see, if only briefly through League Cup matches or when in administration.

Be good to include ex-academy that haven't left the nest too.

I played with all the lads in Woosie's list born in 1995 and 1996 (Reise A, Hiram, Gus Sow, Matt George etc) - just for a season mind.

I really think this list highlights how silly some posters are on here when they constantly call for the youth to be played with little to no context or knowledge of the quality of our youngsters. The reality is that most of our u16s/18s don't even make it pro, yet we sulk when the manager doesn't pick them.

Sure, there are pleasant surprises like with Clyne and AWB (who weren't deemed ready but injuries meant we had no choice but to field them), but for the most part our academy graduates play non-league footy, so even a Mutch or a Lee are better options, as unbelievable as that may sound!

I make you right. I watch Hiram a lot at Exeter and popular he is too and one of the better players but find it strange how he only left us 12 months ago as the gulf between his right level (which he is at now - he may be good enough for League One too -) and The Prem is just so massive.

Surely the club must have realised years ago he and many others just aren't good enough for the top level. So why keep them for so long?

He had to move to Italy and he went to an academy there. Forget which team but pretty sure they were Serie A.

I saw Arron Fray play for Glebe FC a couple of months ago when they played at my local side, AFC Croydon Athletic - I think Fray made his Palace debut v Inter Milan in the centenary match at Selhurst in 2005.

Michael Phillips occasionally coaches my son. Really nice guy, and the kids love him. Hopefully he will make it back up again. Only 20 and if he plays a season of conference football week in week out, he's got a chance.

Loves telling the boys stories about "the time he was on the bench when we beat Arsenal 3-0" or "the time he was on the bench when Giroud scored the scorpion kick". I think he also played against Liverpool in the Hong Kong thing last year, and he's told them that story as well!
