Williams as a deep-lying playmaker?

Particularly at home, why not play Williams alongside Jedinak? Whenever he plays in the hole he drops deep anyway to be involved and be on the ball. He doesn't really get beyond Murray when he plays there so I don't think he'd get many goals either, and we need goals from midfield.

If Dobbie were to play in the hole (thought he was excellent first half against Boro) he'd add more goals than Williams and his overall play in that position isn't too dissimilar to Williams' (when he gets fitter he can start to track back a bit more).

Williams gets tackles in and he's always putting players under pressure. He's great on the ball and he could easily be our "Pirlo" and start all our attacks from deep, as his distribution is very good (much better than KG's...not a dig!). You might say that he should be playing in the final third of the pitch and not in the centre circle, but by having Jedinak, Williams and Dobbie all in the central area we'd keep the ball a lot more and Jonny would have the chance to get forward too. I honestly think someone of Jonny's ability needs to be on the ball all the time, and alongside Jedinak would be where that would happen.

Just an idea...

EDIT: Just based on that first half (vs Leeds) alone this is where he should start every game, with either Dobbie, Moritz or Garvan ahead of Jedi and Jonny. He's been amazing in the tackle and so composed in tight areas in the middle when on it, and everything is going through him...

Williams will be wasted when not floating around the final third - that is where he finds pockets of space and makes sure we find our own attacking players.

Plus KG has massive vvalue to the side - it is no coincidence we stopped hoofing as he came back into the team.

Think you'll find we stopped hoofing in the two second halves Williams came on and Saturdat from the start because he started.

Why on earth would you want to break up the partnership of KG & Jedinak? They are vital to our success, as shown by how we struggled without either of them.

There's also the argument of why push Williams further back into a more disciplined role? Give him the freedom his talent deserves & let him run havoc tearing other teams apart.

Eh? All the while he was injured and not in the team we weren't hoofing until KG went away

That's not to say KG is a better player - but next to Jedi he is more suited in the current set-up.

For the record, Williams is a wonderful player; for me the very best in the squad and he should be in the starting XI every game. Just not in a deep position.

A KG on form is still a tremendous asset and balances the team really well, but I can see where the OP's coming from - Williams could still see plenty of action in the final third by dribbling up to the edge of the box or down a wing and his speed means he's able to recover quickly to tackle back. A good option when we're really chasing the game.

For the record, players like Pirlo and Wilshere are very creative and play as the "2" in a 4231. Just because a player is offensive minded doesn't mean they can't play deeper, they just start all the team's attacks, which is good because the best players know how to start attacks and will pass forward instead of sideways (see KG...again, not a dig!) Dreading Malarkey's post now...

This.

The other thing is, whilst he is an excellent player and very tenacious, the kid is very little! Having 2 'enforcers' in the centre of the park who are also very decent ball players is something that has really helped us control the midfield in many games this season and I don't think it would be worth giving that up when we do have the ability to break teams down with both KG and Jedinak on the pitch. If we were struggling for goals, chances etc. then I'd say there's a good argument to try a more offensive, technically strong ball player in that role but it's not broke, so there's no need to fix it. Let's not get too greedy!

The other useful thing is that having one of Williams or Dobbie coming off the bench is a very good option to have if we down and/or struggling to break teams down. If we can win games with a strong 'joker' left on the bench (which we can) then there is no point playing both your jokers from the start as you don't have this option for when you might need to play it.

I think you might be underestimating how vital KG and Jedi are to them team together.

Personally I'd stick with KG & Jedinak at the back of the three. They create the platform for the likes of Williams, Zaha, Dobbie, Bolasie and Moritz to be creative and attacking.

Williams is only a teenager remember!!

I am not sure that KG is a Premiership footballer, and think he relies heavily on having Jedinak next to him. He has improved markedly from last year so would happily be proved wrong.

Would be interested to see how a fully fit and on song Butterfield would compare to KG. I think he could improve our side, and hope we see the best of him before the 17th March, as he may be a good option in the summer.

I would see Joniesta playing in a deeper role but not until he is a lot older.

Think he's best as a deep laying playmaker as well, but as others have mentioned, the double pivot of KG and Jedi is crucial to our set up this season.

Would be very good there because he is an exceptional player. But is it his best position? No.
