Well I'm showing my personal bias here but by pandering to the swivel-eyed loon brigade in her party this week, May has hardened attitudes all over the rest of the EU.

Oh I don't doubt. I still think even after Brexit that there will still be more workers from the EU moving to Britain than the other way round. We will still have a large net outflow of remittances and probably a trade surplus. Britain will be hurt by the bullying by the EU threats by big business and will still contribute more to the EU than we get back. Not that the British people and taxpayers as the gift that keeps on giving can expect any gratitude. Talking to friends yesterday the threats are starting to harden opinion.

I think the Tories know that we like one kid in the playground standing up to the gang. The minute the UK put their negotiating hand on the table the Junker and Merkel bullies would just reject it. So we in the UK have two choices - hard Brexit or surrender to the EU. It will probably end up as the latter.

They should be holding the Tories to account over Brexit. I have no doubt that May will back down over Brexit. In my opinion she has a party with lots of hard Brexiters who want red meat over leaving. By talking tough she has won herself some leeway with them. Now she can start backtracking bit by bit. The EU negotiators can claim some scalps. We will end up not far from where we are. Still means the ECB needs a growth strategy as they cannot rely for ever on the UK golden goose and it still leaves an unfair immigration system that discriminates against those of us with relatives from the Commonwealth

It's because for the last 15-20 years schools like Wilson's take from all areas. As far away as Brighton.

Personally, I don't see it like that at all. I think it's more a case that the EU as an institution (and the other leading nations within it) have basically had enough of the UK ,and just want us to hurry up and piss off. From their perspective, we have more opt outs and exemptions than anyone else, have said a flat no to some key parts of the European "project", and yet have still been considered an important member despite largely appearing to be pulling in a different direction from the majority of countries.

We then asked for yet more concessions, including on issue fundamental to the whole European project, and having been given some (albeit not the ones we wanted) , voted to leave anyway. I think far from wanting to "intimidate the British people to change their mind" what we're now seeing across Europe is a desire to get rid of "the British problem" as soon as possible so that they can move on to other issues.

Broadly agree but don't fall into the trap of seeing the EU as a single institution. In terms of both our withdrawal agreement and any future trade deal it is 3 institutions: the Commission who delude themselves in thinking they run things while at the same time they need to use the Parliament as their friend against the Council who constantly push back; the Parliament who are basically political groupings each with their mad buggers who live in another world; and the centre of power which is the Council within which there are national interests served by each government who will in case of Brexit act together because they each need the jobs the Single Market brings.

But, yes, we have few friends left after the accumulation of bonkers tactics used by Cameron since 2010. Even the Danes, who were a reliable ally in all things, have for sometime treated us as non-EU so much so did our Ministers forget that if you want things you need to help others in return. Our arrogance has been mind boggling.

No one is trying to make the British people change their minds, I think. I believe European voters and leaders accept the result of the referendum. Certainly they do, down here in the South, and most people want the British to leave as soon as possible because there is no point postponing the inevitable and it is best to start reconstructing. The British referendum is seen as an example of the destructive side of the British nature. There is a bit of Jekyll and Hyde about the British, as with most peoples. In this instance, Hyde won.
But how the government approaches the leaving - I think there's certainly a feeling that May does not have a mandate for how she says she will do this.

I take it from the Sundays the cabinet still split but Hammond looking increasingly isolated while senior members of parliamentary Conservative party positioning to rebel. Any opposition to an ideological Brexit more likely to come from within the Conservatives than Her Majesty's Opposition. The government can't avoid Parliament for ever and t will be interesting to see how and when it chooses its battle. Unless the Courts take that matter out of its hands. Interesting politics
