I was all for VAR but having seen the last few examples, the execution of it clearly needs working on. Just don’t like the fact that there’s doubt now when a goal goes in and it takes away that initial burst of joy when a goal is scored. They need to speed the decisions up a bit too.

My thought from the start was in order to keep the game flowing, that there wouldn’t be any of this stop to wait for the video ref but the ref would use the video ref as almost a second pair of ‘super eyes’, guiding him to right decisions. The key being, speed of the decision. It won’t be as successful as stopping and taking more time to study decisions and get them 100% right, but it will mean the game will keep flowing and they’ll be none of this miming TV nonsense and delays.

I assume it' simply inertia and ignorance to knock VAR. For example, OneSize is completely wrong in that all the instances Lomardo's hair indicated were VAR eligible as each was goal or penalty related. And despite what Salad_Burnet thinks, there is no law of averages balancing things out, especially in cup games when you get knocked out with a single mistake. That's something people say because it seems to make sense but in reality it is a logical fallacy.
I know you live in NZ, but people on this website often go to games. You know, actually buying a ticket, head through the turnstiles and then sit or stand, watching their team at whatever stadium they’re playing at.

Danny Baker has it spot on.

This is probably the reason I dislike it most. There is simply no way it wouldn’t affect you as a fan inside the ground, knowing at the back of your mind that a goal could be chalked off.

Zaha against West Ham, Sakho against Stoke, McArthur against Watford.

Just from the last couple of months alone, here are the three wonderful late goals that just wouldn’t give you the same pumped up mental feeling with VAR in effect. I don’t take drugs, but I would need to find something to replace that emotional feeling if indeed VAR becomes a real thing.

It will kill the OTT excitement that only an important goal can bring you.

Need to get rid now. Once adverts are placed in the VAR moments, they will never stop them.

Given they way they started to sneak a quick advert into the cricket (just after a wicket etc...), it is inevitable that a VAR decision will start to take *just about* long enough to slip a cheeky ad in there too.

I see this as an excellent revenue generating opportunity which has been cunningly created under the guise of improving the quality of the game for benefit of the fans. Trebles all round surely?

Crikey yes.

TV's domination of football gets bigger every season, this would add to it.

I just don't get it. What's wrong with the law of averages?
That is precisely the point. The "law of averages" is too random for the teams that ensure untold riches for themselves, the TV companies and the EPL.
VAR is nothing but a conspiracy to ensure the existing hegemony is maintained.
Only the Big 4 and Liverpool will benefit from this over time.

Yes i agree i have changed my mind after seeing the way it was used, that pen was IMO not a clear error it should be like cricket refs call unless its a clear error.

Goal line technology works because it's a conclusive decision based on definitive technological info. VAR has no such thing as it's nothing more than another person's opinion. If referees and pundits still disagree whilst using it then it shows that it's a waste of time

The one good thing about VAR would be less big club bias - this may help put a stop to VAR.

You need to reread what VAR is there for.

You think the ref will go to VAR if our players do what the Liverpool players did.

It's almost as if it's been designed to fail. The process needs a lot of refining but it's definitely better to have the big decisions made correctly.

The fans in the stadium should be able to watch exactly what the VAR referee is looking at, and be informed of the reasons behind his decision.

Instead of frustration among the fans not knowing what was going on, the whole procedure would be a piece of theatre adding to the emotion rather than destroying it. Much the same as the DRS system does in cricket.
This. The execution is bizarre. Typical of football officials not to look at other sports, and to think that they know best.

It does take away the spontaneous feeling when a goal is scored. I like how it can definitively prove offside though but again even with that issue it requires the ref to ignore the flag. Would love to know what the refs think of it. They dont look like they enjoy it much. Things like penalties are also always going to be contentious as it's all interpretation.
