Steve Ditko spider-man artist died last week

He created the look and told the original tales of Spider-man way back in the 60s and he created Dr Strange too.

Died last week in his 90s - bit of a loner was not found for a couple of days after he died.

I came across the old Spidey stories in the British comic "Pow!" (later "Pow & Wham") when I was at primary school and was hooked - taking on CrimeMaster & The Green Goblin, The Scorpion, Doc Ock, Molten Man, Vulture, Mystery, Kraven the Hunter - it was all set in a strange 40s type New York and Spidey quipped his way through all his fights. And in the same comics you'd get British comic strips like The Two Faces of Janus

Long time ago but Ditko's work still sets the benchmark for Spider-man.

My favourite story was in Spider-man 25 when a robot with J Jonah Jameson's face chases Spidey across New York until it catches him in its tentacles.

Wacky and brilliant.

Best episodes were with the cameos.

X-Men, Punisher and Dr Strange.

Kirby and Ditko both fell out with Stan Lee, never been sure what to believe.

Im just about to launch into Sean Howes "Marvel comics, the untold story", it might have an explanation.

I suspect it was straightforward - money and credit for their work. Ditko created everything about Dr Strange, indisputably, but Stan Lee's name appeared as writer. The Marvel Method mostly involved the artists doing the whole damn thing and Lee putting in some dialogue.

Ditko got a later credit as plotters when he complained. But in the end he probably walked because he just didn't like Lee any more. Ditko was a bit of an Ayn Rand fan and Lee was a bit of liberal - don't know if that had any actual relevance though.

I always liked to think Steve had another couple of years of issues drawn and that Stan could add the words posthumously but if so they ain't found them yet.

Long gone I think. Didn't he contribute some artwork to Watchmen?

I used to like all sorts of Comic strips, not just Marvel - read all the TinTin ones, loved Captain Haddock and Thomson and Thompson & Bianca Castefiore & Professor Calculus.

Yeah, sorry, it was just a shit joke.

He was indeed the only person apart from Dave Gibbons to draw a Watchmen page.

I got the joke but struggled to remember who he was!

That's a great bit of art though.

I'm working my way through the Commando war magazines, some stunning artwork from artists that also did stuff in 2000ad etc.
