Lovely idea
I have a vague recollection something similar, albeit at a slightly lower scale, was done in the 2009 Tour of Ireland for Adrien Niyonshuti - the Pro-Tour debut of the 1st professional Rwandan cyclist.

Teams for TdF announced yesterday – no real surprises, the wild cards all went to French teams (the same seems to happen with Italian teams at the Giro and Spanish at the Vuelta), the net result is no place for previous winner Carlos Sastre or Denis Menchov (3rd last year) in what, realistically would have been his last opportunity to go for the maillot jeune. This is because Geox-TMC was denied a place based on what happened in its previous incarnation as Saunier Duval when Ricco and another rider failed drugs tests.

Bit of a joke really. Looking at it from a, say, Spanish point of view, why is a team with Sastre (previous winner) and Menchov (podium last year) not allowed in when Sky are? Okay so Ricco was and is a dick, but Cofidis have a shady past (the year Wiggins got carted off) but they are still awarded a place. Sky, and Cofidis haven't done much at all, or have much recent history of doing much.

odd

Seems like a bizarre decision to leave Geox-TMC because a couple of riders failed drugs tests in a previous incarnation when Astana are still allowed a place after all their shenanigans. The ASO never cease to amaze me.

The difference is that As**** have a full Pro Tour licence and Geox don't

True, but they've been banned before....The wierd thing is that GEOX formally known as Footon etc and before that Sunier Duval (probably spelt wrong) were allowed in the Tour last year, so as far as I'm concerned this "previous dodgy behaviour" stuff doesn't stack up. They (ASO) just realised that on rankings alone there was only going to be one French team in the tour....

Chuffed Ben Swift got his second stage win and 3rd overall in the Tour Down under. Apparently provided a nice bump to Britain's chances of getting more riders in the London 2012 road race too.

new Real Peloton podcast out now, no Matt Rendell, just Ned with Dean Downing and Swifty. Very funny, well worth a listen.

Book question, is the Coppi book worth reading? I've run out of books!

I really enjoyed the Coppi book.

I must admit I knew very little about him other than the highlights of his Palmarčs. His story was a very interesting one -rivalry with Bartali, the break-up of his marriage, the consequent condemnation by the Catholic Church and the conspiracy theories about his death. They all make for a fascinating read which is well told by William Fotheringham.

The podcast was better this time, largely because it didn’t involve
• Skype calls breaking up and not being edited out
• Having to listen Mardy Bum played on the ukulele á la George Formby
However, listening to a recording of Geraint Thomas (I think) snoring into a phone and then being played back into a microphone was not the high point.

All in all though, it made cleaning the bathroom more acceptable yesterday evening, as you say 'well worth a listen'.

Best part of a second off of Boardman's 4k record certainly grabs the attention. Fabian Cancellara better look out.

Yup, the Aussies are getting there aren't they? i reckon that when it comes to the road, if he gets selected for the tour (he might be knackered by then) garmin will win the TTT.

Tour of Qatar starts Sunday, live on Eurosport. It's flat, windy and brown but at least it's cycling!

Depends a bit on whether Garmin are willing to plan on only having 8 for most of the Tour; suspect they will leave him for a year or two.
Interview with one of his Garmin colleagues David Millar earlier in the week

Millar is rather full of himself isn't he?
