No it's a bit of a fudge, and an untested one at that. A better set up is the proven concession system as operated on London Overground and fairly similarly on the DLR. Service levels, fares, in fact all major specifications are set by TfL, and the operator (LOROL for the Overground) is paid a set fee with strict penalty clauses for not delivering.

I must admit I'm not sure I understand it entirely, but that was my original thought when I read the article.

This was by no means a slur on the selhurst drivers. They are without doubt some of the best drivers I've come across, their ability to stop on sixpence is testament to their training.

Oh, I assumed that was the sort of arrangement with the new franchise.

Think i know the Tony you are talking about but don't remember him being a dtm. Seem to remember him standing in as a tcs if they were short staffed. Maybe dtm came later.

Possibly, lived a minutes walk from the depot as you walk towards selhurst park, still there as far as I know. A proper railway man.

Absolutely useless yesterday morning and again this morning. Today's driver doesn't even know why we are delayed.

...And that is sometimes the case. We aren't allowed our phones on in the cabs. You just need to sit at that red signal.

So unless you can get through to the signaller or s/he puts out a general call you won't have an idea. If there is a conductor s/he can look on their Blackberry for any news.

Commuters however, can use technology in an instant - before they leave the house/office and during the journey and to see if any engineering works that may affect them over the weekend...

Just to be clear I wasn't moaning about the driver, just saying that if the driver doesn't know then there's no chance the passengers will. Which is obviously frustrating. The new franchise have promised a "world class service" apparently. I'll believe it when I see it. It must be annoying for the driver too.

I find the SouthernRailUK twitter feed to be very useful in finding out what is going on. It is excellent for giving information ahead of time on cancelled trains, amended stops due to late running trains and short formations.

The National Rail twitter feed is also excellent for information about emergency engineering works and line closures due to trespass or jumpers.

No problem mon.

Doubt I'll be doing that train very often though. It's a different depot's job.
