Roy just added about ten million to the price of RLC there. Didn’t defend Wilf’s choice and made an indirect swipe at it tbh.

Yeah was good listening. Explained the lack of subs period as well which seemed a bit mystifying at the time.

Roy saying RLC was our best player in almost everyone of his appearances...

I think that's called guilding the Lilly, as that's certainly a long way from the truth

Indeed. Maybe he's trying to deflect some Wilf attention onto RLC. If I had to choose, I know which one I'd rather have in red & blue next season.

Funny comments to make, as they aren't true. Perhaps he has given up hope of signing him and is deflecting the interest in Zaha onto RLC.

Edit: ah I was not the first with the idea.

Does anyone keep a record of who has been voted the MoM each week on the BBS?

I find that usually reflects my own thoughts and it’d interesting to know how many times RLC won it. My guess is he won a couple, one near the start of the season and one near the end.

He was great in a few matches, but definitely not all he played in.

Maybe Roy just being loyal to his players. He was talking up Chungy in recent weeks and hoped South Korea would still consider him for a World Cup place despite his lack of game time. It seems to have worked.

RLC isn't one of his players.

I would be interested to see his reaction if one of our podcasts invited him, and put these points to him.

RH comes from a generation which felt that the England team is the pinnacle of English football, and the FA Cup it's greatest celebration. Sadly, neither is true in 2018.

Think you are being very unfair on Southgate here.

He had a great playing career, giving excellent service to Palace, Villa and Middlesbrough.

It’s not realistic to expect him to be a Palace cheerleader given he is a serving football manager.

Southgate is a class act and good guy. So I think you are off on one making the case that he isn’t!!

He was a very good player, but never quite made it to the top level (Smith played him as a midfielder).
As for the rest .... we all have our opinions. Let's see how he does as England manager, it's pretty clear the punditry see him as an imposter from a "non-elite club background" and are waiting to pounce.

Never really liked Southgate, seems to have airbrushed his time at Palace.

Ray Parlour tells a story about him when he became Middlesbrough s manager.

Along the lines " he came into the dressing room being all matey, just treat me as one of the lads, you don't have to call me gaffer call me what you want".

So Parlour pipes up " ok big nose", he never picked Parlour again.

Never forget Southgate's programme notes in '94 where he slagged off we fans for taunting Man Utd's tourists at Old Trafford. "See you on the motorway" etc. Want to guess who the Watford born Southgate supported?

Not 100% accurate, what happened was that GS was made manager after being a player for a time. He called a meeting with playing staff, coaches etc, stood up and said that he was no longer their mte, he wanted to be called "gaffer" or "boss"...Parlour blurted out "What about big nose?", Southgate none too amused and never picked Parlour again.

I don't think I have disagreed with anything Roy has said since he arrived last September, but there were a couple of things he said at a recent Times live event that troubled me a little (emphasis on the little).

Firstly he mentioned that RLC had been effectively our best player in every game that he has played. He has been fantastic, and there may be an element of Roy trying to butter him up, but it's still wildly inaccurate.

More intriguing was his answer to a question about Wilf and England. Paraphrasing somewhat (the whole thing is on The Game podcast if anyone wants to listen), he spoke about players generally, with specific reference to Wilf and Victor Moses, about being able to switch nations despite effectively being brought up by another nation's international structure. Some of his comments echoed Danny Mills in talking about patience, and desire, and it being down to the player to want to play for the country rather than the country having to court him. He also said he suspects a great number of players, especially African ones, would regret their decision down the line.

Nothing major, but I'm not sure what Wilf would make of those comments if he heard them.

Roy also said, explaining why Wilf wasn't picked in the Manchester United period, that by the time he was back at Palace the situation had passed, when actually it was a considerable while later that he eventually declared for the Ivory Coast.

The bulk of the blame lies with Gareth Southgate (and Henderson and everything else), but I think Roy should have taken Wilf to Euro 2016, and said as much at the time so am not being wise after the event.
