Laptop for kids- advise needed

Looking for the BBS to help me out here. Kids need a laptop as they now need to do homework via the internet. I use phones and tablets for everything so haven't needed one before.

Can you get one for around £200 that's not completely crap? It's only really for homework but would be nice if you could browse the internet quickly etc. I know I'm not going to get anything great but any links would be much appreciated.

I have an 11”6 inch Asus vivobook, it’s no MacBook Pro but it’s reliable, sleek and cheap, around the 200 quid mark. Suppose the size is the main drawback but it should do the job if your kids just need to do homework and surf the interwebz. To view the link you have to Register or Login

This one says it's installed with office 365 for £189.00. Is that similar?

Only difference is that the Curry’s one comes with a years anti virus software, which costs like 70-80 quid if you buy it separately. Knowing what adolescents can get up to on the internet it might be worth the extra money but up to you.

Bumping this. Daughter has struggled through A levels and first year of Uni with a brick she bought for 150 quid. Now wants something more portable, reliable and powerful.

Only really document processing, web browsing and watching films. She's studying sciences though so it's very possible she may need to get into statistics packages eventually - maybe post-grad.

I know Mac performance pretty well, but PCs is a dark art to me. But I've narrowed it down to a couple of models that balance price and performance (and weight). The one thing I can't work out is FOR ROUGHLY THE SAME PRICE would we be better off with the i3 + 8GB option, or the i5 (8th Gen) with 4GB.

My experience with Macs is that I have always ended up upgrading memory. ATM I'm actually working on a 2009 Core2Duo which is absolutely fine despite the biblical age of the processor, but only since I upgraded to 8GB. Of course my 2013 MacBook Air (i5 8GB and SSD) goes like the wind and personally I'd have that second hand any day over the new HP laptops I'm looking at. But it's not for me. She's very serious about her studies so I'm happy to go with her agenda.

What say you experts? All things being equal i3+8GB or i5+4GB???

What is it she's looking to use it for? i3 vs i5 is the processing power. I would suggest the latter is probably better but I'm not an expert. Take a look at the website hotuk deals To view the link you have to Register or Login - and search under laptops, you can get some good deals highlighted on there.

Re: Microsoft office products, you can use office online (free) which has the basic functions of word, and you can also use google docs (also free) which aren't bad either.

Usually pretty easy + cheap to upgrade memory, not so straightforward with processer.

That crossed my mind as I've done it on 3 Macs over the years, once myself (the original iMac - very easy).
