Television licence

I'm consistently staggered by the amount of people who moan about the cost of a TV licence in this country.

The BBC consistently delivers top quality television, radio and online output. I think it's actually outstanding value for money compared to what people are willing to pay for Sky, Virgin etc.

Obviously millions would be anti this idea, but how great would it be if the BBC whacked 10-20 on the licence fee in order to secure test cricket, international rugby, Premier League football etc?

Here we go again.

It is another form of regressive taxation that benefits Middle England far more than those who need it most.

Two points arise

1. When Middle England complains of stealth taxes and all that bollox can it please note this subsidy to its pleasure.

2. This is another example of how unfair and divisive Britain is today.

Of course, you will all look for reasons to defend it because it suits you and it is the status quo. But its bollox.

Surely it is the lower classes who would benefit more from this? If the BBC carried more sport surely those on benefits could spend their money on something more important than SKY?

Why the bloody hell should people be compelled to pay for your veiwing pleasure.

Sports people are paid astronomical amoyunts of money and it is disgusting that a poll tax should be used to feather their nests.

I've never understand why our government doesn't pass a law requiring free broadcast rights for all football on our television channels. Obviously this would upset the players, legions of middle-men and broadcasting executives, but they could still make enough for a decent living from the world-wide rights etc. and developing their own programmes that would inspire viewers to watch on commercial channels.

Those who watch football and sport may benefit, the largest constituency of which is men. Men don't tend to be poor, not even in their own households.

Numerous studies have shown that benefits paid to women, rather than men, work to up the quality of life for children and those women. Paying for sport on the public purse would be a very bad idea indeed.

I certainly think all the crown jewels of sport, and all sport at an international level, should be available on free-to-air television. There was a brief debate about it last year, but I'm not sure there has been much movement since.

Whilst the BBC and ITV cover the Olympics, football/rugby World Cups, Wimbledon etc, I think it's scandalous that things like English test cricket, the Ryder Cup and Lions tours are sold to the highest bidder.

i'd be interested to see the statistics that you've used to come up with this.

It's always been my impression that the people that watch the most TV are poor people:

Chavs
Unemployed
Couch Potatoes
the elderly
