It would cost hundreds of millions to redevelop that site - much, much more than a club our size could afford to spend. In any event, it would never get through planning for myriad reasons.

Selhurst Park, for all its problems and difficulties, is the only viable choice.

Sorry to piss on your parade but like CPP, it will never happen and we should simply focus on what is possible and achievable.

I agree it would cost a lot and we would need significant help but the idea could be a multi-use stadium complex. If you imagine the pitch being on the 1st floor of the building then you could build whatever you wanted on the ground floor, bars, restaurants, conference rooms, Blue Orchid II etc.

The idea and success of Box Park proves how much Croydon needs something like this. I know they are rebuilding the shopping centre and Fairfield Halls but the place is still so desolate and drab.

Realistically we are probably staying at Selhurst but if we really cant get the planning permission required then it's worth looking at all options, no matter how unrealistic they may seem.

Of course you are right .. Palace would need something like a couple of American billionaire investors on board...That would never happen... Would it!

I have a horrible feeling, what is possible at Selhurst is going to be a major let down.

Cllr Newman said: "We are 100% behind the club and want to work with them on the modernisation of Selhurst Park.

"I'm slightly surprised by Steve Parish's comments, as we have people at the highest level of the council willing to help create a stadium for the 21st century.

"Joanne Negrini, our chief exec, has been in touch with the club and offered her expertise in the tough negotiations that are going to have to take place with Sainsbury's.

"We can't act until we have formal plans of course, but informally we can help, and that offer is already on the table."

Cllr Newman was responding to comments made earlier this week by Mr Parish who stated his ambitions for the Eagles, but tempered his hopes with a note of caution concerning the council and Sainsbury's.

He said: "The council in particular have a huge role to play in this. They can help us or they can hinder us. And also the other players on the site, Sainsbury's.

"They can be a part of this or they can be in the way and I would have to say right now we need to understand more about where both of those parties really sit."

The council has now come out strongly in favour of developing the traditional ground in Croydon, as part of further regeneration in the borough.

Cllr Newman has stated the council will help with any negotiations with the company to ensure stadium development goes smoothly.

He said: "It would be fantastic to have a ground that is for more than just a match day, but with facilities to make it a real hub at the heart of the Croydon community.

"That's the really exciting prospect.

"This administration has a record in delivering regeneration, and as I've said, we have already offered our expertise."

The supermarket chain has suggested it would be open to talks with Crystal Palace.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury's said: "We know the club want to expand the stadium and have been discussing a number of options with them, so they can further develop their plans."

Although this is all very positive. I'd love to know what the plan is for this? It's too far from Croydon Town Centre to be a 'hub at the heart of the Croydon community'. The ground is fairly remote & the area is a bit run down & quiet outside of matchdays. So what could they possibly do to entice people to go there when Palace aren't playing?

Needle Exchange and branch of Greggs should swing it.

He could hardly say making a hub out of a shithole on the edge of Croydon town centre could he?

I think it's a bit of flannel but it does show that the council appear to be more onside with us than they have been in the past

Sainsbury's need more pressure now so they play ball and we can move forward.

At ten past two today there must have been well over a hundred, probably more like 150, in the bit of Sainsbury's that was open. A good customer opportunity for Sainsbury's to work with the club to increase sales on match day.

Promise to use a Main Stand lounge as a local OAP drop in centre, and may blood donor sessions?

The diagram on To view the link you have to Register or Login is a bit rubbish though - the Whitehorse Lane flats are not in the way at all. The author clearly doesn't know its the nearest Wooderson Close houses in the way, and also that SP isn't the slightest bit interest in filling in 3 of the corners of the ground as they suggest, but in massively expanding the main stand.

That diagram took all of 6 seconds to make and doesn't really show the full capabilities anyway.

I'm amazed we didn't move the Tasty Jerk in as tenants of the old Bargain Bucket shop unit for that very purpose

Never understood why AW ist worked on first while Main Stand issues resovled. The area itself it huge. That side of the ground is so low too even another tier would hardly impact on the houses.

Most of all the stand is a disgrace.
