He epitomises a player who is playing for the team, but not his position. Yes he is doing ok, he works quite hard, but lacks any cutting edge or fear of losing his place in the side.

I personally would bench him. He needs to up his game and get back to his best. He isn't bringing enough to the table to justify a regular starting place and his relatively high salary at the moment.

I wonder if Zaha looks at him and thinks "come on mate, help me out a bit please?". He really needs to take responsibility a bit more often and offer more goal threat.

He was so poor yesterday, three woeful crosses from promising positions. He tries so hard but zero end product. But who would replace him? Our bench is thin without Meyer and Dann.

Exactly. And he's clearly got a good shot on him so I don't know why he's so reluctant to shoot. These limp, lofted crosses to the far post won't work at the moment without a No 9.

Definitely. He's one of the most senior, experienced players in the squad so needs to add a lot more in the final third.

No matter how dross Andros' attacking returns are, no matter how pointless his high crosses to nobody in the box are and despite his unwillingness to take people on, get into the box or even take more than one shot per game (even though he's arguably our second-most naturally talented player and has a wand of a left foot), I'll come on here and inexplicably find that apparently none of this is his fault. It's all down to Schlupp, McArthur, Meyer not playing, Benteke or Hodgson etc. etc. etc. Instead of anyone daring to suggest his paltry return of five league goals in 80 matches and being outscored by our left-back might be part of the reason we struggle in attack and can't muster a point without Wilf in the team, he gets rewarded with his own song.

Facetiousness aside, he's an extremely frustrating player in a way the someone like Schlupp will never be. With all due respect to Jeff and the people getting extremely angry about him right now, I don't know too many people who looked at him before he joined us, got really excited about the signing, saw him pulling up trees for us and now see a shadow of the magnificent player he once was. I would say he's always been a very limited player who is playing like...a very limited player.

Townsend is different. Until recently, he'd been an England international who we signed in his prime who many thought would be an upgrade on Bolasie in goals and assists. When he joined and I saw his first couple of games, I was very impressed. He seemed a level above his poorly-performing teammates and when he scored that wonderful goal against Stoke, I assumed he would go on to bigger and better things but instead he stopped being a winger and kept dropping further and further back into centre midfield and then had that positioning argument with Pardew.

His form massively picked up when Big Sam arrived. He upped his work rate but more importantly picked up a couple of goals and a few assists thus earning a sacred spot in my fantasy football team. I would say that has been his best spell for us so far and again I thought he would go on from there.

Then we get to last season where after a terrible start, the whole team performed well and because the goals were spread amongst quite a few players and he continued "working hard", amongst all the euphoria it went completely under the radar that he only scored twice in 35 games.

I'm not necessarily advocating he should be dropped because we're not exactly blessed with alternatives and he is gifted with a natural talent most of our players don't have but the particular style of play he has adopted since joining us of working hard but never really getting near the goal seems like a waste of an attacking position on the pitch, highlighted even more when others aren't scoring to make up for it. Yet he seems immune to criticism while others with far less talent are lambasted.
Great post. Don't get me wrong not having a decent striker for the past 18 months hasn't helped him but Andros just gets such an easy ride on here. Yeah he might have the odd assist....but so he fking should...the bloke is not producing or doing enough.

Yet when there were reports of big money bids in the summer (no evidence this was actually true) those of us saying we should take the money were quickly shouted down. He has to be doing more than he currently is.

The only time he has really delivered for us was When little Sam call him out for not bringing his England form into a Palace shirt ... In training and match day .... We all mainly rate and like him .... He needs to shot more and take some free kicks on goal .... Remember the one against us for Newcastle?

Bit of a problem with AT now ?well, for a good while). Solid performances in general, but no more than that. Works hard but sometimes in wrong place defending wise. Not creating anything.

Combined with a dip in Mac on the other side, it's become a real issue.

Townsend is mr average. But his passing and ability to retain the ball recently hasnít been great

We need to bring in some competition for him in January as his performances have definitely dipped this season. As well as the complete lack of goal threat, he's not even getting as many crosses in as before (at least it doesn't appear as though he is).

He was up against a midfielder playing out of position yesterday but you wouldn't have known. Wilf had him on toast in the few minutes he switched to the right. Even AWB had more of a go than Townsend.

I also wish he would shoot more when he gets the chance.

My expectations for Townsend to provide match winning moments are very low indeed. Some real competition for his place would be good, I feel.

I do think that this season he is being expected to play a double role, in part because he has proven he can but also to allow Wilf to 'rest' rather than cover back and it's has taken its toll. He is playing as a narrow right midfielder and covering in front and around the RB (i.e a normal double role) but is then expected to act as a wide forward winger and creator. So his equivalent on the other side is doing the wide midfielder role but isn't expected to play like a wide forward.

Ayew and Andros do the heavy lifting as defensive forwards etc when we don't have the ball. This allows Wilf to stay high and TBH conserve energy for when he gets the ball. This is far more the case this year than last. I certainly wouldn't want Wilf playing as a second LB but I am not convinced about him not sharing the load on closing down up front defensively. I am sure this will be to instruction rather than him being idle but I am not sure it helps him TBH. He just seems to get less and less mobile when we do have the ball. It's not easy to stand around and then suddenly make constant runs and TBH he is too often lulling into a pattern of moving to a spot and just expecting it to be played to him despite being surrounded. Now he is super Wilf but he could be phenomal Wilf if he could just make some intelligent runs in and around the box.

Should take a look at Aguero and even Silva when playing further forward as they make themselves a yard or two before they get it and then use their skill. They never stop.

Back to Andros. I don't think we will see the best of him going forward until he gets a bit more cover. The WBA game was a good example where he had less covering to do. I do think Kouyate will make a difference if he continues to play alongside Luka. Andros at some point needs to make the point for his own sake. As I say if Wilf just takes a bit more of the load which I reckon would help him anyway, that would help too. Andros is still involved in most of our best moments and is the only one that regularly gets the ball into the box.

Wilf is probably five times the player Townsend is or will ever be - the way he tortured Bellerin at times yesterday was a joy to behold. He did the same to Lichensteiner too. That was first class wing play.

Townsend plays it safe and is a good and reliable pro but his end product is lacking. I would always pick him at the moment but his is definitely a position where we need more competition.

I worry for Townsend, yes he has some trickery but as a winger, you need strength and pace at this level. He posses neither. He usually does his best work from a deep position. I believe the main reason he plays on the right is that he cannot get past the fullback to cross with his left foot on the other side of the field.

I think he'd be better on the left whipping crosses in without always having to check back. That would certainly be better for the likes of Wickham, Benteke, Sorloth etc.
