Surprised Charlton away 1979 not been mentioned yet. Mayhem. Trouble all during the game and after. Loads of Palace in their end and about 50 police down the middle keeping, and regularly failing, the two warring factions apart. Was on the massive terrace along the side watching the entertainment with the other few thousand Palace fans.

Our little group got jumped on in a surprise attack by a bigger and older mob of theirs but we were quick on our toes apart from one straggler who took a couple of body hits. Could have been a lot worse.

Between 1978-85 it felt like every other game there was fairly significant bother but probably a lot less than that in reality. But the away trips were a genuine health and safety challenge to be sure and you never told the olds what is was really like as they would surely have done their best to somehow stop their kid from going. I look back and think 'what the fvck was I doing there?' in some instances. Standing in the West Ham end 1978 when Palace score and not remaining calm is the action of an idiot. Doh! Got away with it tho'

I was in that covered end. Most palace went in there because it was pissing with rain.

I’d forgotten that charlton game - can remember some older fans coming up to check we were ok and some of them going after the group that jumped us.

Liverpool away was interesting police escort away from the ground marched to the station and Liverpool fans throwing stuff down from bridges.

Villa being chased when we got off the coach and then a brick thrown from the seats above that just missed us.

No idea why I used to go

Friday night game if I remember correctly. Originally went in the Charlton end as it was p*ssing down and our stand was in the open.

We must have had 25% of their home end that night.
