I have a vague memory of Mabbutt coming back from injury against Charlton, scoring, and then getting injured again.

Was that also the game when Charlton ended up with an outfield player in goal?

Any others come to mind?
Good question, in my time since 1968 I’d say John Jackson for keeping us up almost single handily 69-73 then Peter Taylor and then AJ 04/05 but still can’t recall a single season where we didn’t win a single game with the absence of the same player

David Hopkin 1996/97 dragged us to promotion. Didn't have a bad game all season.

Speroni stopped us being relegated 2009/10.

Wolves away in Play Offs was a tour de force from Hopkin. Fantastic goal too.

IMHO Brighty was just as important, his experience was key to bring Ian on, but for sure Wrighty was a huge player for us, although we made the cup final without him.

Didn't score a PL point without AJ playing in 2004/05. Top scorer after him got 4 goals.

It's a three way tie between Jacko, AJ and Wilfried.

You could argue Ambrose from 09/10 as well, although to suggest either of them were solely responsible for us staying up would do the rest of the squad a disservice IMO.

AJ was the first to come to mind.
20th on the table at Xmas that season under Dowie and he went on a mad scoring spree.

I'd say the difference is that AJ got us single-handedly from 20th to 18th. Wilf got us from 20th to 11th.

Lol I think he meant the season before when AJ took us into the play-offs!
