I was extremely pissed off by our transfer moves in ‘98/99. Some of them absolutely pointless.
Shipps, Dyer, Bent, Hermann, Edworthy, Miller (he was still good then) out and lots of very iffy random buys which totally unsettled us when we easily had enough for a title push that season. |

They had everything to do with the transfer, Wright was unsettled by the comments and the Arse pounced.

Geoff Thomas to Wolves for £800k was a strange one as we had turned down £3m from Blackburn earlier in the season.

We were in the Premier League when we turned down Blackburn, but had been relegated by the time he went to Wolves - so very different circumstances.

True just found it unusual how little we got for him.

he engineered a move off the back of that documentary. He also offered Ron no support in the press.

I thought it was to do with Kenny's gambling debts. He needed the signing on fee and we needed a striker so the swap was set up. Didn't we also get Paul Barron as part of the deal, or was that done separately?

I've posted this on here before, and I'll post it again:
The best transfer business we've managed in the last 10 years was getting Murray in on a free. The worst transfer business we've managed in the last 10 years was selling him. Although buying Mutch was also an utter disaster. A bit like administration in 2010 can trace its way back to the awful tenure of Peter Taylor, the last couple of miserable years can be put down to Pardew. He's probably the biggest charlatan this club has had since Venables was last here. |

Is that Gabbiadini who had a one in three strike rate for us.

The weird thing about Ismael was that he went on to have a great career, playing for Bayern Munich.

Most definitely. We sold Wright for £2.5m, spending £1.8m of it on signing Gabbiadini as his replacement. He failed to settle and was sold for only £1m about 4 months later. Those were big fees in those days and a 800k loss was a big financial hit for us.

Which was part of the reason for him leaving so quickly. He could not cope with the expectation/pressure.
I remember him scoring a relatively simple goal at Holmesdale End and his first response was just to make the phew sort of gesture puffing his cheeks out in the manner we do when we are relieved about something. |

Yes about Kenny - straight swap. I thought we paid about £400k for Barron, but I could be wrong.
