Lee Sinott, Paul Mortimor, Marco No Goalso, Glynn Hodges...he did sign some great players but also some expensive dross.....
I dont know the story but at the time he had a team of youngsters just out of the administration era I could guess an old talented professional to add a bit of experience could have been on his list .....such as a Micky Droy type.. Dont get me wrong Sir Steve will always be a Palace hero. |

He fitted in well at West Ham which is more than can be said for that Israeli bloke that got assaulted on their training ground.

According to Mr Ruddock himself, it was Coppell who wanted Ruddock. Coppell apparently knew the big lad only had 15-20 games a season in him but wanted Neil to lift the dressing room and add some experience. Two days later, Coppell was sacked. Ruddock also commented on Alan Smith being a bit mad and give naked team talks with a glass of red wine. Make of that what you will....

i have had the pleasure of meeting ruddock a few times as he used to drink in my dads pub. needless to say was a piss head. also been to a few charity golf days/ dinners with the likes of shearer and le tiss, razor always hammered. does a quality after dinner speech, might not have taken life at palace too seriously but he is a top man though

Hindsight is a wonderful thing on a lot of these threads. From Coppell's point of view, we were just out of administration, with a young and rather quiet squad. As Jordan took over, we did at last have a bit of money, so Coppell was looking for some experience, a character, and someone to symbolise the fact that we were now a buying club capable of attracting "big name" players. It didn't work out (and Ruddock turned out to be a disgrace), but the consequences of administration meant that proper long-term planning was impossible.
