The Nest (Former Palace ground opposite Selhurst Station)
There's not a dedicated thread for Palace's old ground The Nest ( until now)
I'd love to see as many pictures of this old ground as possible, in the hope that I might be able to get a painting done of this old ground! Here are some pictures I have managed to find - if you have any others you'd like to share feel free to post them up, or just PM me and I'd be happy to see an emailed scan or suchlike. Now enjoy! (pictures to follow)

Croydon Common FC in action at the Nest, you can see the original small stand in this pic:-
To view the link you have to Register or Login The original small stand at the Nest burned down and was replaced with this nearly full length stand:- To view the link you have to Register or Login Here is a Palace team photo with the new stand in the background:- To view the link you have to Register or Login The Palace team warming up in from of the opposite side, behind which ran a railway line:- To view the link you have to Register or Login Match action with the stand (and large flagpost) in the background:- To view the link you have to Register or Login More match action, with the stand in the background, and the centrepiece gable able to be seen:- To view the link you have to Register or Login After Palace moved out of The Nest, and went to Selhurst Park, a club called Tramways FC moved in. They paid CPFC rent. This is a team pic of that club, with the stand and gable in view behind:- To view the link you have to Register or Login incidentally, Palace's ground The Nest was sometimes referred to as 'Selhurst', way before Selhurst Park was built. Great pictures DE; there's one in Football grounds of London (White and Lilliman) taken in September 1923, Palace playing Fulham.

Great thread! I remember you taking me there years ago Dave, so why not put up a photo of the remaining wall as there's surely plenty of Palace fans totally oblivious about this ground.

DE - the glass collector in the Selhurst Arms has a very good book (written by one of his friends) on Croydon Common FC.
Well worth a look I would have thought - I had a brief glimpse at the end of last season.

Kai - Can do, although to be honest it's not a very exciting wall!
In case anyone has missed it, it was long thought that the only remaining trace of "The Nest" was the wall opposite Selhurst Station (on the other side of the Zebra crossing) However, Ian King (club historian) recently visited the site of The Nest, because he did a 3 part piece for Palace World on Palace's 3 former grounds......and discovered what is possibly what was the grandstand still remaining - the stand roof is gone, but the rest of the brick stand structure is intact and used by the rail company "Southern" as stores. The position of the stand is spot on when compared to maps of the time, the age of the bricks tie in, and even the number of windows matches the number of rooms as described on Palace's original leasehold documents. You can even see the 'risers' (steps in the seating tier) which there is no other explanation for other tha the previous use of the structure as a stand. To see what I'm waffling on about, watch 'Part 3' on Palace World - it was only put on in the last few weeks. ADE - I know of the book "Who Killed the Cock Robins" all about Croydon Common FC, but it has been out of print for ages. Do you reckon Croydon Local Studies Library might have a copy I could view?

I assume that's the same book.
I'll make sure Don brings it into the pub so you can have a look at it. I wouldn't be surprised to learn it's out of print, from memory it was all done on a type writer. Croydon Library would be the best bet for a copy I would have thought.

Yep - Croydon Local Studies Library (a mine of information and rare books on local stuff) is definitely on my 'to do' list.
If you can ask Don to bring it in though, so I could have a quick peruse, that'd be great!

Bit of railway history of Selhurst Station. Line opened as two tracks in 1862, Selhurst Station opened in 1865. Station rebuilt when tracks between East Croydon and Balham widened by adding two more on the eastern side (Platform 4 at Selhurst is the only original part left from 1865 it seems) and in use from 1903.
It would appear that when this widening took place there were a lot of brick walls built along the line (especially between Thornton Heath & Selhurst) together with the larger stations and the boundary wall in Selhurst Road probably dates from this time. Bricks may well have come from the brickfield that is now Selhurst Park. |

Interesting titbit - thanks Ian.
On a related theme, assuming this eventually goes ahead, I'd like to be able to include an old steam train going past the ground somehow, if at all possible. I'm trying to find a reasonably clear picture of a typical steam train that would have gone past the ground (between 1918 and 1924). I've found this one, which I think is a bog standard, fairly typical train which would hopefully have been around then:- Should be OK? (the trains were still steam then?)

Sorry to disappoint you DE but that's a rather special train which one would be unlikely to see steaming past Selhurst.
During the time span of 1918 - 1924 most of the trains would have been electric - probably the only exception would have been trains going to Oxted and Uckfield (and Brighton via Uckfield and Lewes), the occasional special, e.g. the Royal Train on its way to Epsom for the Derby and goods trains. Electric trains were introduced from Victoria in May 1911 and London Bridge in March 1912; the electricity came from an overhead system, supplied by the German company, AEG. Needless to say the outbreak of war meant that the supply of equipment was cut off and by September 1929 the lines were standardised using the third-rail system already in operation in South west London. (Will have a look for suitable photos.) |

DE - here's some from a couple of books I have. There are few more I could e-mail to you if you are interested.
Ruskin Old Boy is spot on regarding the train services at Selhurst. |
