The latest issue of "The Railway Magazine" (Dec. 2010) has two pieces in it of interest here. A small item on page 10 says "It has been revealed that the main grandstand of CPFC's former stadium at The Nest....... survives as a stores building inside Selhurst Depot". I do not know who has sent this in.
Then by sheer coincidence on page 52 there is a current aerial view of Selhurst Depot. To the left of the main shed (towards the bottom of the picture) can be seen the white roof and chimney of the above mentioned stores building. I have also found a copy of the plan of the depot in 1927 superimposed on top of the plan of The Nest and although the stores building looks like it could be a remnant of the grandstand it is now obviously not in the correct place for this to be so! The current stores building cut across one end of it. The only way I can see now to prove any connection is if there is a way of dating the bricks used in the stores building. It wasn't me. Must have been Mike or one of his connections. It was always nagging me slightly that from a bird's eye view the stores building was at a slightly different angle to the grandstand, however the stores building has so many coincidental features, not least the profile of 'steps' on the side wall that I still really want it to be true!
Ian - My Dad goes bak to Spain Friday, and whilst I've got everything needed bar the 'public transport' side of things, he's not going to have room in his luggage anyway (he's on hand luggage only and already well on the limit of what he can carry) so no great rush for the remaining info. He's back over in April and he may have the opportunity then to take it all back. He's busy over winter this year anyway painting a backdrop for a neighbour's model railway layout

I really hope this comes to fruition at some point.

The mini mention was beacuse the editor of the magazine felt that someone else was going to mention it first. He's been trying to get Southern to allow a small group in without success. On the other matter Simon Inglis is interested as he is researching Played in London and obviously the old stand could feature - if it is the stand. He too has noted that the shed is on a different alignment to the stand. Maybe the steps and the rooms underneath are similar by chance, or did they just use the old bricks?

Has anyone contacted Southern directly to see if they can have a look? Or are they not playing ball?

I'm delighted to show on here a rare unpublished picture of a Palace crowd at "The Nest", circa 1920. The railway line is running behind the crowd.

"Having read the Independent article, I went to the Open Day to have a look around. I'd never been before. There's no doubt the Grandstand is in very poor condition. But equally, there's no doubt that it's an atmospheric survivor of a very different sporting age. It would be a great shame for it to be bulldozed. And it would be nice to think that the link with CPFC might be celebrated in some way. Maybe somebody knowledgable in this field should look into organising a CPFC architecture day, visiting what's left of former grounds and perhaps some parts of the Old Stand at Selhurst that we don't get to see. I'd pay to come along."

Have made contact with Southern Railway and am awaiting a call from them to discuss if it's possible to visit Selhurst Depot. I shall explain there is no need to go out into the carriage sidings (towards Norwood Junction) but just the main infrastructure buildings nearest to Selhurst Station.

Pretty good view of the possible former grandstand (building with chimney)

Happened upon this postcard on ebay today
Annoyingly it was a Buy it now which ended last Thursday (before I saw it ). Buy it now was £65 too, much less than the £300+ that the last one on ebay went or in November 2009. Ho hum, hopefully I'll have better luck next time one comes up in another 2 years time!
