Bloody hell. Had actually forgotten how many aspects he had to his game.
And how amazing Sasa and Matt Jansen were too. Don't know whether to laugh or cry. |

I was absolutely gobsmacked when he signed, really thought it was the start of something special. Just a shame everything else that went on that season, not least the managerial fiasco. How the **** was Coppell supposed to manage when Goldberk was telling all and sundry he'd be replaced by Ve***les imminently?

Can still feel the excitement when it was announced when had signed Lombardo. Remember hearing the rumours pre-seaon away at Gillingham and totally not believing them !

I picked up a copy of the Daily Mail on a flight to the UK that had a 2 page spread on him and his signing. I was reading all about it when I realised who was sitting a row infront? The man himself!!!! A 5 min excitable chat later and I had my signed Daily Mail with the memory of a magic moment and what I think was his 1st CPFC autograph :-) Thoroughly decent bloke and the best player I have ever seen in a Palace shirt. I still think of how things would have been if he hadnt got injured.

Also the loss of Warhurst etc didn't help. And anyone who slates our other italian never saw him and lombardo rip liverpool apart for the 20 minutes they were on the pitch together before they both limped off within minutes of each other. That season, iI truly believe, should have ended in a top ten finish and would have seen us challenging for a European place the following season.

There was no hope of us finishing in the top 10 when we had players like Brolin, Dyer, Edworthy, Rodger and Fullarton being in the first team regularly... |

The best thing about Lombardo was just not what he did on the pitch, but the complete air of professionalism he had about him in general. He witnessed some crazy ass shit at our club, but conducted himself with the greatest of class.
And as TheMexicanHorse alluded to, the biggest tragedy was not seeing him perform in a team of the Wright/Bright calibre. He had some distinctly average players around him.

Lombardo, Jansen and Curcic. I remember one game at home to Tottenham - I think it was when Klinsmann scored an amazing equaliser denying us victory close to the end of the game?
That day I really felt I was dreaming, and the big pinch waking us all up wasn't far off!! Still, those games were amazing while they lasted. Also, Leeds away - Lombardo was magical, my favourite player I have ever seen in the flesh. My dad and I loved him already when we saw him play for Sampdoria, couldn't believe it when we signed him!!!
