The Derby home game, his only win as player-boss, was such a complete performance. He ran the show, setting up Sasa & Bent. Such a shame we were in freefall, but this is Palace.

No question he was the best Player, I'll ever witness in a Palace shirt. Words fail me on how good he was. Could you imagine had he been in a team alongside Geoff Thomas,Wright Bright etc..........wow

We also beat Sheffield Wed 1-0 (Morrison scored on his debut in the last min)

They took charge of the last two games that campaign (Bolton away, Sheff wed home) it was a total farce. I sometimes think, Noades knew the buyout would proceed, and thought "why not have one last play of my beloved Palace, we're already down, so its a win/win situation"
We had more headlines to off field matters, and the season was a total write off, yet things looked so positive at the beginning of the campaign despite the loss of Hopkin.

They are good championship players in their prime, no way could Bruce Dyer for example be described as a top ten Premiership player, it was a farcical statement to claim we had a squad capable of finishing in the higher reaches of the Premiership...

End of.

You seem to miss the fact that we would have bought other players the following season, Lombardo would have been a huge incentive for other players of his calibre to sign.

your lack of faith is disappointing, but not unexpected.

You said a top ten finish for the 97/98...not the season after. A bit like me saying if Noades had invested after the 90/91 success we could have done a Leeds and won the 91/92 league title...

It's irrelevant to your original point, which was Palace should have finished in the top ten of 97/98 side, when in fact only Lombardo, Warhurst and Jansen were the only players at the club with the ability to play at a higher level.

Curcic ? Hreidarsson ? Mullins ? Marcus Bent ?

All spent a fair chunk of their careers as established top-flight players.

tbh I struggle to think of a poster on these boards that consistently posts as much shite as you.

The loss of Hoppo was huge, he was immense for us in promotion.

Is it both our last promotions that have seen us lose key players (Hoppo and, yes Julian Gray) before we even started. You need yo significantly strengthen and to be weakened before you even start trying to add quality seriously means playing catch up.

Routledge and Gray were pivotal, with AJ, in going up. If Gray had even produced a fraction of Routledge we'd have stayed up.

Lombardo was just amazing to watch - he had presence and grace and just oozed ability - he was the kind of player that should have been playing for a top four side. That he left Palace for Lazio and won the Cup Winners Cup, Serie A, the Supercoppa Italiana, the Coppa Italia and the European Super Cup after he left us indicates just how great a talent he was.

I'm still surprised that he played for us in the 1st Division and that no Premiership side decided to take him on.

He was the best player ive ever seen live full stop, he had a magical grace and class about everything he did, i remember one of last games of the season was against Man utd and usually you can tell the difference in quality between palace players and their players but although we lost we was the best player on the pitch.

The only time I remember he doing something bad was when he missed a free diving header from about 10 yards, headed up 5 yards over the bar, think it might have been against Everton, anyone remember that?

Have to agree with this Rob. I know there was serious interest from Middlesbrough, but the guy had proved how capable he was.
I remember all the talk surrounding a move for Gianluca Vialli, who was very close friends with Attilio. I've only truly be sad to see a handful of players leave, Wright, Martyn, Lombardo & Jansen.

His Little Boy must be about 15 now, sign him up!!!

That's why I have no heroes, they always leave in the end, Wright of course, Lombardo & Jansen within a week of each other.

I don't take things personally these days

Aaaaah boy did we celebrate that day! Great atmosphere at Selhurst. Wasn't that about the time Sasa was doing his bonkers protests?
