I saw Ian Wright score his first ever goal for Palace in Oct 1985 against Oldham in front of a massive crowd of just over 5000.
I just knew then, it would be the first of many goals he would score for us. Him leaving was such a shock - No indication of it - Switched on the Teletext and saw 'Wright signs for Arsenal for £2.5mil' I actually though 'is there a Wright who plays in Scotland ??' Reading the story confirmed the bad news. Couldn't blame him for going, after all, Arsenal were the League Champions, but I was just disappointed that he appeared to express little regret at leaving us. OK, it's only words but it would have been nice to here him say that he was sad to be leaving Palace. Perhaps that was why some Palace fans gave Wrighty stick, with he played against us, for the Arse ? I still thought that was sad. Brighty seem to leave on much better terms with us, a year later. Ian Wright is still an all tiime Palace great IMO. Last edited by Maiden Eagle; 28-02-2013 at 06:03 PM. |

Ian Wright was our one big chance to become a big club. Noades and the lilly-livered FA blew it.
Best player in Palace's history.

Ian Wright the best player I remember in all my time following Palace. See him come back and play for Geoff Thomas charity game he done any over head from the edge of the area then I remember again why he was the best we have ever had.

Great player for us no doubt.
What he did at Highbury is the single most hurtful thing I've experienced in football. His 'apology' for this later doesn't actually mean shit since he never came good on his "I'll play for Palace for free" during Admin I. Instead he went to 3rd tier Burnley. No forgiveness from me, but each to their own. For me Lombardo remains to highest quality player to ever wear a Palace shirt. |

I don't judge by some notion of how any of the players were perceived to behave in contract negotiations I wasn't privvy too, but both Rodgers and Wright played every minute on the pitch for CPFC like it was their last, and that's all any fan could ask

Interesting to read today that Ian Wright applied for the Swindon manager's job vacated by Paulo Di Canio.
Always seemed a bit too volatile a character to become a manager for my money - although I did love him as a player and a character whilst he was at Palace between 1985 to 1991. It would be fascinating to see him take on a manager's job - will he have the same defensive approach to the game that former heroes Peter Taylor and Dougie Freedman have displayed in their managerial careers?

I was equally disappointed with the departures of Peter Taylor and Kenny Sansom.
In many ways Sansom in particular, arguably the best footballer Palace have ever produced. |

Wrighty obviously is a useful striker coach, but I don't see him as a No.1.

Apparantly he turned the Swindon job down, too early or something.

I remember going to Man U the year we finished 3rd in the league, we lost 2-0 that day but Wrighty ruined Steve Bruce, i remember him taking Brucie out twice in the space of about 10 minutes right in front of our fans, of course we all loved it and gave Bruce stick for the rest of the game. Fantastic player, and a nice bloke, i've met him a couple of times and he's always had the time to have a quick chat. |

What a great story of the human spirit prevailing against the odds. Him talking about how his parents and stepdad were towards him as a child making him angry angers me too.

As we were, and had been giving him a lot of stick, rather than throw things on the pitch and cry for two weeks on the yet to be invented BBS, we all laughed too.
