Apparently a Liverpool director writing in the programme for the replay at Anfield on Jan 12th (it had been 0-0 at SP four days earlier) commented on Palace's play and the fact that two Liverpool players had been brought down it seems. It is reported that the referee after the first game congratulated the CP team on its performance.
Palace lost the replay 1-3 after extra time and a match report I have states that Fagan (of Liverpool) having been beaten by Collins for the umpteenth time 'grasped Collins by the collar and struck him with the flat of his right hand'. Most expected "marching orders" for Fagan but the ref (a new one for the replay) only issued a caution. The reporter muses that if it had been a Third Division player striking one from the First there would have been a different outcome. No change there then over the years! |
