Terrible times. I remember the 83/84 season in particular. Crowds down to around the 5,000 (and lower) mark. I recall standing on the terraces in those times thinking that only a short few years earlier we had nearly 60,000 for the Burnley game. The official attendance was 51 odd thousand, can't remember the actual number anymore, but it was nearer 60,000. A mixture of Noades, the appointment of Mullery and Brian Bason etc saw crowds deplete. |

Palace 2 -0 up at home to Leeds and Norman Hunter commits what is still the worst foul I've ever seen. Studs slid down John Cravens leg, from knee to ankle. And wasn't Hunter pleased with himself To view the link you have to Register or Login |

One of my favourite early Palace memories. Crashed it in off the crossbar from 20 + yards just after Ipswich had gone 3-1 up. We then plugged away till Wright equalised at the death if my memory serves me right. Felt very much like a win given how things were going at the time.

November 10th 2012. Palace win 2-1 at Peterborough with two goals in two minutes from Andre Moritz in the 81st and KG in the 83rd both right in front of 3700 travelling Palace fans stood on the terraces all of whom when totally mental. What day that was.

Weirdly, Hunter lined up at centre-forward for the kick-off and took the ball in a bee-line for Craven. He made no attempt to get past him, but simply deliberately raked his studs down John's shin, the worst over-the-top foul ever. Astonishingly, even by standards back then, it only warranted a booking. Craven went off maimed, we were unsettled, Leeds-Leeds-Leeds came back for an undeserved 2-2 draw. Even worse, Hunter apparently admitted it after the game, saying that Craven had already scored two and they could not afford him getting a third! Leeds at their worst. Cloughie had it spot on!! Next home game was a bit special, though |
