All the more frustrating, there wasn't much between EPL teams in the early 90s. Norwich finished 3rd in '93 and Leeds won the title after one year back following promotion. Blackburn and Newcastle before they really started to spend big also had good seasons. Forest too finished 3rd in '95 when arguably we had a stronger side. Very annoying.

Ian Brantfoot offered us Le Tissier as well

The back page of the paper the day after Wright went to Arsenal was that Bright was going to Chelsea for about £900k with Shearer, Deane and Tommy Wright (Leicester) coming to Palace. My memory was that they wouldn't or couldn't go the extra £200k for Shearer as Southampton wanted £3m. And when he went to Blackburn that summer for more everyone thought it was madness.

Still think we were done like a kipper on the Bright deal as well. Bright was valued at 850k, Williams 500k with 350k coming to us.....madness

Shearer would have been amazing but I think Cole would have been much suited to our style of play. Armstrong proved great business but his goalscoring record with Millwall was modest and he was pretty much an unknown but what a signing! Still one of the best Palace strikers I have ever seen in full flight - Should have done a lot more in his career. A real talent and athlete at a time when players didn't have that kind of pace. |

Losing Wright, Bright and Gray in the space of a year plus massive injuries to Thomas and not replacing properly was the beginning of the end of that team sadly.

Noades screwed up big time in the space of 18months. Had a team that came third, knew The Prem league was about to start and that the guaranteed extra dosh was coming, but he wasn't prepared to underpin the team to prepare for it by either borrowing transfer funds nor using his own cash as a loan. You could get very decent proven players for £1mill still back then. Coppell was also culpable. Long ball sh1te.

I'm not sure how fair that is. We had an awful start to the season (with only one win by the end of November) but then he did turn it round. In the end, another bad run in January cost us dear - and probably too many draws overall - but we went down with a massive points total. Had Villa beaten Oldham, we would have stayed up comfortably, and I'm sure would have been fine the next season.

Hey the great Lee Sinnot was our big summer signing in 1991, we did aim for the top back then.

That match was on the first day ever of the Premier League!

Shearer was highly thought of in the game but not really a name player at that time funnily enough. Even when Dalglish signed him for a record fee most thought it was a waste of money. Long time ago now but that's how I recall it.
Shearer was the only player in hindsight who could have replaced Wright IMO - I think the others mentioned might have struggled. But certainly Deane and Cole would have been better bets that Marco. Armstrong came in later and had no pressure and was brilliant. |

And Salako's injury.

The fact Wright, Bright, Martyn, Southgate, Collymore and Coleman all proved their worth after Palace shows the basics were in place for us. |

I love Sir Steve but he did waste some money (Bodin, Mortimer, Gabiaddini must have resulted in a 1.5m+ loss) and that was massive money for us at the time.

yep we weren't fashionable, and the media never gave the team the credit they deserved. We were direct and physical and many teams knew they'd come down to Selhurst and have 90 mins of players bending their ear snapping at their heals. I'd love to see a few more leaders like that in the current set up.

He was but only made 9 appearances for Palace in 1991/92 and was loaned out to Newcastle in that season. He cost £550000 from Swindon but was sold back for half that ten months later. I wonder if his original fee was on a sliding scale based on appearances?
