Bert Head- A Manager with ideas.
England had won the World Cup. Bert Head was new Palace manager. The article attached November 1966 to me makes interesting reading. What do you think ?
Bobby Tambling I believe was the first player loaned between first division clubs in January 1970 from Chelsea |

I wonder what Mr. Hodgson thinks?

We may have been the first victims, I think, in 1974.

Great name, he had, as well - entirely of its time. Like a character from a Fabulous Furry Freak Bros comic.

I'm more intrigued about the fluctuation in gates. There's a really tantalising sentence in that piece that mentions one school of thought.... and then it fades to nothing.

If he swapped his first name for the previous manager's it would have been quite funny.

I guess you mean the manager who followed him, 'Big Mal' Malcolm Allison. Bert was totally different, very quiet and unassuming! A top manager.

No I was thinking of Dick Graham. Although in hindsight I think Arthur Rowe might have got a brief stint before Bert got the job.

Yes, and the same when four went down from the Premiership in May 1995.

I remember writing a letter to him when I was about 14, telling him I was concerned that he had said he wanted to make the stadium an all-seater and that I wouldn't be able to afford to go any more. He actually wrote back to me; it's a shame I no longer have his reply. He said that this was likely to be in the distant future by when he expected I would be wealthy enough to afford a seat! It was a really nice, friendly reply.
