Southgate was one of the few bright sparks during that season but our midfield was so lightweight since Gray had left in early 92' and we desperately missed Salako.
McGoldrick was probably our best player that campaign and had finally added goals to his game (Remember the Noades 10k bet which he won by October?) Shaw's form was patchy and defensively we shipped too many goals, when defensively we had been so resolute in previous campaigns. Armstrong exceeded all expectations and Williams just didn't get going and had various injuries.
The early season draws never helped us. We drew 8 out of our first 13 games only amassing one win in that period and we had so many injuries that Sir Steve had no option but to introduce some of the youth team (likes of Bowry, Watts, Ndah & co)
Geoff had his head turned when Blackburn came in. That seemed to affect him unfortunately.

Yep - Coleman up front showed the problems.

I was at a meal last night with a number of friends and more than one of them said words to the effect that we were safe. This is despite me keep telling them that we could still go down (unlikely I know).
Clubs being supported by others at the meal were Oxford, Portsmouth and the Clowns. Interesting rivalry between them.
It was incredibly unlikely though - similar to a lightning bolt. I understand your thinking but lightning doesn't tend to strike twice ;-)

I remember it very well, I was a student, a girl friend (who actually had a massive crush on me, relevant, I'll get to it) who wasn't into football at the time just took the piss 'pfff jesus it's only a stupid game, get over it etc', I didn't speak to her for a week.

She subsequently went on to marry a Brighton fan, they've been ST holders for 20 years - he hates me, last time I saw him was the 5-0 game when they had the pleasure of staying at my place after the game. He had a face like thundered all night.

I reminded her about this after the Brighton game the other day, how I'd love to see them go down this year (not going to happen I know).

So, an 8 goal difference swing, which ultimately did for us.

And if you look at the final table, 5 of the Top 7 are no longer in the Prem, and City, Chelsea and Spurs were mid table. How things have changed !
That is mental.

Was this our cruelest relegation of all? I was too young for 1993 and I would say 2004/05 was horrendous. When Ventola scored it looked like we had done it, only for Higginbotham to ruin things for us. Then when Dougie came on at The Valley and completely changed the game, and AJ scored that penalty, again, it looked like things finally were going to fall into place for us.

I never want to experience anything like that again. Suffered a horrible bout of depression for about a week after that & vowed never to watch football again.

It was so unlikely, I just couldn't believe it when it actually happened. Oldham had been shit all season!

Liverpool beating us 5-0 in November that season was tough, but this defeat against the Wombles was horrendous. Absolutely chucked it down and they tore us to shreds (most notably Robbie Earle & Andy Clarke). Coppell came out and apologised after the game and tbf the team showed a bit of character by thumping Middlesbourough on Easter Monday.

BTW: Oldham the name Gunnar Halle will forever haunt me

Oldham humped 0-3 at home by Southend tonight and staring down the barrel at Division 4

Not celebrating now are you Oldham

Yes, it was Wimbledon's nominal status as the 'home' team that made that defeat so utterly galling. It was pissing down with rain so most of the Palace support was undercover in the AW with The Holmesdale pretty sparsely populated. Wimbledon (relatively speaking) packed out their preferred home end at The Whitehorse and watching them prancing about, going doolally in our own sodding stadium as the goals rattled in was absolutely sickening.

This footage doesn't quite do it justice but it's bad enough. It was certainly this match that brought it home that we were in serious bother and so it proved.

At least Altonwood got the extra rental income. I guess that's what matters.

Now now, Ron charged a fair rent for use of the stadium on match days and he showed remarkable foresight in predicting that someone like Mark Goldberg might rock up 15 years later with some Walter Mittyesque plans, etc etc and so on and so forth

Can't believe Oldham ended up scoring only 4 less goals than Man U.

Pretty fair call - I'd add the relegation under Dowie after the 3-3 draw at Charlton

Having gone to Maine Road in midweek, I stayed up north with my in laws and actually went to Oldham v Southampton on the saturday. I went in the Southampton end and slowly got sicker and sicker as reality dawned. One of only two times I have cried over football - the other being the 1976 f a cup semi - as I knew we had missed a golden chance to be a real force two years earlier.

2-2. The same result against Saints the week before too
We did draw 3-3 against Norwich shortly before that though, and came back from 3-1 down. That was a strange season as at times we looked massively out of our depth, but in the end we should have stayed up.
