The rivalry certainly took a quantum leap during the 1976/77 season, as there were two league matches and an FA Cup tie that lasted three games, with major clashes at all 5 games.

However, many older fans feel the rivalry was already started around three years before Mullery became the Weeds boss.

I'd say 99% - the season before Mullery and Venables took over was when I think it really kicked off. I remember fights at East Croydon station after Brighton's 1-0 win at Selhurst which was basically an early goal for them (in a horrible green kit) then 80 minutes of solid Palace pressure capped by a last-gasp Ian Evans volley over an empty net. Then the 2-0 defeat at the Goldstone later in the season was when any promotion hopes died - and the first hearing of the Seagulls chant which they admit came about because they were outsung at Selhurst.

Malcolm Allison left Palace the season before the Palace v Brighton second replay at Stamford Bridge. Likewise Peter Taylor left Brighton at the end of the previous season.
So both clubs had new managers that season; Venables and Mullery.

A 1-0 defeat at Brighton on the opening day of the 1974/75 season was certainly a catalyst.

I started going regularly to Palace from 1974 onwards, but talking to various people, it was not the match in the League you mentioned that kicked it off, but a friendly in the Summer of 1973 at B*****@n. In fact it was the first match between Palace and the Weeds since the early 1960's, where there had been a cosmic shift in the status of both clubs.

Big Mal knew his football. And here is proof of the great man's assessment that Mullery was slow (go to 51 secs in)

oddly there was a much earlier incident when bert head waited for mullery to arrive by train at norwood only to hear on the radio he'd signed for fulham?

It's interesting here that we have two men who arguably fashioned a rivalry between two clubs that had little erstwhile reason to exist and yet grows every year...

The video on after that one is fascinating as well. Shows the **** George Beat breaking another players leg, just like he did years later to our own Ian Evans. ****.
