Was in Florence on holiday and persuaded my wife to experience some football. She hasn't been since. The assassination of Robert Kennedy on the same day seemed to get more of the headlines.

Hate is a strong word, but Mullary, what an odious cock that is and the things his mother did to give him a chance in life, shameful.....

I'd say 99% - the season before Mullery and Venables took over was when I think it really kicked off. I remember fights at East Croydon station after Brighton's 1-0 win at Selhurst which was basically an early goal for them (in a horrible green kit) then 80 minutes of solid Palace pressure capped by a last-gasp Ian Evans volley over an empty net. Then the 2-0 defeat at the Goldstone later in the season was when any promotion hopes died - and the first hearing of the Seagulls chant which they admit came about because they were outsung at Selhurst.

Malcolm Allison left Palace the season before the Palace v Brighton second replay at Stamford Bridge. Likewise Peter Taylor left Brighton at the end of the previous season.
So both clubs had new managers that season; Venables and Mullery. A 1-0 defeat at Brighton on the opening day of the 1974/75 season was certainly a catalyst.
