He’s on BT2 at the mo. Great interview with his career. Started crying because of racial treatment he heard whilst at Charlton. He’s a top bloke.

It was Watford youth player who was racist and Mark was told by Graham Taylor that the kid had been disciplined but he said for Mark not to go to the press as it could have been an isolated incident.

Yep, that’s it. Same show by the looks of it now on SSPL.

Wonder who the player was. He says he doesn’t know although could just be saying that.

I think that he just identified him by the number he wore in the match.

Bright interview

This is quite heartwarming and worth a watch if you have 10 mins.

I quite like the ‘car’ story with Wright, Bright & Thomas.

Great video clip.

Just a flavour of a lovely book, written with warmth, humour and no self pity.

Read it! You won’t be disappointed.

We are lucky to have him, and the book helps explain why the club perseveres with a few young ‘uns from difficult backgrounds.

Very interesting interview that. Fascinated to hear Brighty say he grew up knowing Garth Crooks - especially if you know Crook’s comments on the Ron Noades controversy back in the early 1990s about black players, which seemed ironic knowing Brighty’s close relationship with Ron.

Very emotional to see how talking about his foster parents and the separation from his natural parents affected him, it’s a huge issue to deal with and the story about his teacher back in Stoke sending him a message on Cup Final day pulled the heart strings too.

Mark is a massive part of Palace’s story, but that short interview shed a fascinating light on his background that makes him an even bigger hero after learning it.

It made me think about when we judge footballers as wankers or whatever when we have no idea where they’ve come from or what baggage they’ve got.

He told a lovely story at the end of last season, when I was officiating at a Corporate Match at Selhurst Park. He was doing a Q&A session before the game, along with Darren Ambrose. He said that when he and Wrighty were at their peak and very well known, they played Liverpool. Jan Molby the Danish International was playing for Liverpool at the time and Wrighty said as they came out of the tunnel , "Let's wind Molby up today." Mark was reluctant but went along with it. Ian Wright started telling Jan Molby how slow, fat and out of condition he was. Brighty said that he chipped in with a few comments himself. After a while Jan Molby stopped and looked at them both. He said, "Guys you obviously know who I am. But who are you?" Mark said it was such a brilliant put down that he just walked away shaking his head... and left Wrighty arguing!

Two thirds of the way through the book. wondering who the Swindon player that gave Wrighty racist abuse in the first leg of the play off semi-final. Spurred Palace on to win the second leg.

Yes that’s been mentioned before but no mention of the player. Wright has said in an interview that ‘he was one of those’. Coppell had to drag them into the changing rooms after the 1st leg defeat as they were all squaring up. He then told them to calm down and not to worry as we were playing them at Selhurst in a few days and it was their chance to exact proper revenge. And boy did they

You know what; I was always impressed with the mature and dignified way Brighty carried himself throughout his career before I even knew about his past. At 24 - still a tender age himself - he was charged with mentoring a young, out of control, box of fireworks that was Ian Wright, and he did a fantastic job from what I could see.

Knowing what I know now about Brighty’s childhood, I’m just full of admiration and respect at the way he has handled himself. There’s clearly a very big and good heart there.

I’m reading the book atm and I’m actually very disappointed. I really want to know the story - in itself its fascinating- but as a text it’s very bland and very repetitive.

Nothing against Brighty - he’s a footballer not an author and I agree with all the good things people have said about him. Someone should have helped with the writing that’s all.
