Palace vs Cambridge April 79, who scored?
Towards the end of this season it will be forty years since my first game, Palace vs Cambridge Utd, 10th April 1979 (a few days after my eleventh birthday). With hindsight towards the end of 1978-79 season was the perfect time to start supporting Palace, I thought that all seasons would be like that.
I can remember that the score was 1-1 but I can't remember who scored, is there anyone here with a better memory than me, someone who can recall the name of the goal scorer?

I went to the Cambridge game in 84, they were in the major doldrums, but still got away with a 1-1 draw, heady days!

Cheers Neil, I knew he was one of my favourite players from that era for a reason (along with pretty much all of that team).

A couple of things seem to stick in my memory of Cambridge United in that 78/79 season.
Not sure if anyone else knows, but I have the idea that the away game, just before Christmas, was where our new striker, Mike Elwiss, who had looked very good up to that point, got his knee injury, which more or less finished his Palace career after just five months? Also Cambridge's main forward was a Rod Stewart lookalike called Alan Biley, big blond mullett but quite useful for them, I think both matches were drawn.

Seen a few home & aways v Cambridge down the years, the only one that really sticks in my mind is the 1990 cup match. Didn't think I'd get a ticket for that when I turned up at Selhurst and saw the queue for our 2000 allocation!

I remember an away day to Cambridge late 70's on a freezing cold day.
Police were confiscating all Doc Marten boots at the turnstile. Everyone had to stand watching in bare feet on a freezing terrace and claim your boots back on the way out. It was obviously done to prevent trouble but almost everyone wore dm's then. |
