Not worse than the Murray sale, who has been, but remember chris Powell playing as right back and was really surprised when we let him go.

Still a considerably better transfer than selling Murray, plus we didn't have a choice in selling Wright

Different days yes we had virtually no choice but to sell Wright, where as Murray no more wanted to go than we want to see Mullery back as Chairman

Murray went because like Jedi he is a leader and “ Wankstain”Pardew can’t live with leaders, he’d rather bring in Mutch and Chungy to tell them what a tactical genius he is

Jedinak couldn't handle the pace in his final season with us. It was best for him to drop down the division as he was becoming a passenger with 30 mins to go.

I thought Murray went as he wanted guaranteed first team football something that we couldn’t offer given his long lay off then performances out on loan and his age

Though I think it was obvious his hold up play and nonsecwoukd have done us well rap with Gayle and I would have worked harder to keep him, it was Murray who pushed for the move.. and as it turns out he was right to go play every week in the championship to get back to fitness

Worst transfer was the sake of Wright (whichever way you remember the story), hommleaving us set us back over a decade... if only we could have got Shearer... not that he wanted to come to us.

Sold for £80,000 according to the Guardian. To view the link you have to Register or Login

Remember only first team players went for circa £350k in those days

I was sad when Murray left and it is so painful seeing him doing so well for the Weed whilst we're desperately struggling upfront. But people talk like we sold him straight into the Brighton Premier League first team. We sold him to Bournemouth. He failed there and dropped down a division. He refound his form there, but even then Brighton didn't expect him to be first choice in the Premier League and tried to buy replacements. The Indian Summer of his career has been a surprise to everyone.

As for Wright: no transfer has ever hurt as much. And whilst £2.5m was a lot at the time, it was also just on the cusp of a burst of transfer inflation so soon started to look very cheap.

Both of these were disastrous, although Murray is obviously fresher in the memory. A bit of man management that Pardew was clearly not capable of, along the lines of "you will get plenty of game time, we need you and strength in depth", and in the end insisting that he was needed.

By the way there were plenty on here that thought the £3m was a good price for him at the time. What a joke. Gayle was a more difficult time me as we were playing one up front.

Why didn't we have a choice? Wright didn't demand to go, he was buying a tv for his mum and was told to go for talks with Arsenal and there wasn't a deadline in that era until March 31st.

The money we received for Wright, £2.5m, was spent on players so I fail to see (or remember) why we had no choice but to accept.
He had already asked to go, Ron Noades made some comments on TV about black players that he didn't like, i think it was along the lines that black players would not make good managers. A stupid thing to say,but you can't call Noades racist with all the black players we had at that time,

Ron's comments were stupid, but I don't think they had any impact on Wright leaving.
