On this day ..... November 4th 1972
Always love bringing this one up .....and another year has passed.
Don Roger's debut on November 4th at home against Everton. I can still remember it as though it was yesterday. On 23 minutes, Rogers broke away from inside his own half, racing onto a through ball from John Craven, as England fullback Henry Newton chased in vain, Don coolly chipped Everton goalkeeper David Lawson into the Whitehorse Lane goal. Is it really 46 years. I remember so much about the day ….. my 8 mates and I as 12 year old cycled the 4 miles or so to play football against a local village, Ampney Crucis. It was a horrible, cold freezing grey day. I played in goal and had the radio next to one of the “jumper for goalposts”, listening for updates ...... I even remember stopping on the cycle ride back for a drink of orange squash …….. halcyon days indeed ........

I was there. Never forget Mel Blyth getting sent off for hitting that annoying little blonde who played for Everton!

I was in the New Stand enclosure when it was a new stand not over 40 years old. Like many it seems a recent memory clearer see him bearing down at pace towards the goal. The start of a magical period of some of the greatest goals scored at Selhurst unfortunate that we went down at the end of the season. Really Dons time at Palace was short but still remains my favourite player only Wilf since has the same magic there have been great goal scorers defenders probably better playersnone though that touch that something specialthat is hard to put into words.

Don's debut indeed. He had scored many goals for Swindon and helped them to beat Arsenal in the League Cup previously with a sterling performance. His reputation preceded him and it was thanks in no small measure to Bert Head's persuasive powers that he signed for us.
On debut day he had been hanging around on the wing not doing a whole lot for twenty-or-so minutes, and some were probably wondering about the step up for him. Then, a clearance from Everton pressure and Don was away from the half-way line like a whippet, outpacing all around him. He cleverly drew David Lawson before coolly chipping the ball into the net for a much needed win. A Palace hero was born |

For me he was one of our best ever if not The best, he used to glide over those heavy muddy pitches unlike what todays players enjoy, then ping some accurate crosses over when not getting into the box himself, and would drift past quality defenders as you mentioned (Newton) and many others like they were not there, and still score a hatful of goals all of this for a Winger. |

One of the greatest players we've ever had. Madness but typical that he was never selected by England.

There were a number of less talented players around who played for "more prestigious" clubs who continually got the nod. 'Twas always thus. Another player criminally overlooked was John Jackson, but that is for another thread.

Think Don would have played for England had he not stayed so loyal to Swindon and moved to a Div. 1 club earlier. Of course moving to Palace did not help him as even then we were not a "big club" . There were moves in a lot of the papers to call him up ,never happened.

Ramsey, Mercer & Revie didnt favour out & out wingers ... A waste of talent in my opinion.
