I was at Ayresome Park for the 3-2 win to clinch the title. Was a great day and always remember getting off the train and seeing the players boarding the coach back at Kings Cross after the game and everyone singing 'Palace are back'.

BTW: Saw Sean Hughes walking close to Middlesbrough station post match with a 6 pack at the station looking worse for wear.

Saw him at Luton too (probably the same year if we played them)

We beat Luton 1-0 Away to secure promotion so it was probably then. Think we scored in about the third minute.

Best two games for me were the away wins at Brum and WBA, we played with such flair that season, similar to how we have played this year at certain times albeit with a much better defence.

The team of 1993/94 would take the absolute piss out of our current team, every aspect of our Defence for starters is probably ten times better than who we have now.

Martyn > Speroni

Humphrey > Ward
Gordon / Shaw > Moxey / Parr
Thorn / Young / Coleman > Delaney / Gabbidon / Ramage

Good away day at Forest. Damian Matthew scoring his only Palace goal. Game finished 1-1.

Also went to the game away to Grimsby the week previous. What a dive of a place. Again, 1-1. Can't remember who scored for us.

I saw him after the Stoke game and a mate saw him do his stand up, in Manchester I think, that night and he mentioned being at the game in his act.

That journey from the station to the Victoria Ground was ropey. Was it that year loads of Palace got picked off en route and assaulted? There were some injuries on display in the away end.

Yep, lost 3-2 away in November (despite being 2-0 up) and we lost 2-1 at home a month later. County hadn't won away in 14 months or some ridiculous figure.
Our only other home defeats that campaign from memory came against Middlesbrough, & Watford (the last stand)

Classic case of a manager not knowing how to strenthen the team in the top flight, and again once the goals that season had dried up. Dowie and Houghton came too late to save us.

I was at a hardcore Polish Catholic Wedding in Putney. Extreme Catholicism all in a foreign language. While having no way to find out the Palace score.

Weddings on Saturday's during the season should be outlawed.

Was this really Smith's fault? If Houghton and Dowie had come earlier we'd of stayed up. Also Paul Stewart wasn't signed and we ended up with Darren Patterson.

There are lots of answers to this and we could argue for ever about what went wrong in that season in the premier league, so I'll just leave you with this nugget from the one eyed goon.

"Ricky Newman is the best passer of the ball in the Premier League".

Ricky Newman was shocking and Smith a poor, if slightly unlucky manager.

I just feel that the owner at that time failed to back him with the Stewart signing and The Houghton/Dowie singings were too late.

I'm not looking to turn this into another RGN thread though!

Houghton and Dowie were both good signings... But you're right too late. We did seem to sign some right shit that season though... Preece, Patterson are two that stand out. We were also harmed by not having a decent back up for Nige... If he hadn't have got injured we'd have stayed up imho. Wilmot was awful!

Was Patterson a signing? I remember him being around and not used.

The 6-1 defeat at home on the first day killed us really - he panicked. Darren Pitcher, who had been signed from Charlton, had a mare at right back if I recall correctly. Then Patterson, who had been a CB in the reserves came in at right back. Young and Smith fell out and Shaw was moved to CB where to be honest he excelled.

But Smith over-reacted to that defeat.

Did Pitcher play RB? I thought he played Centre Mid against Liverpool.

What DID Young and Smith fall out about? I'll also always remember during a lean scoring spell most of the crowd calling for Paul Williams to come on during the Boxing Day game against QPR. Pretty sure Smith only put him on because of the constant chants from the supporters.

Pitcher was awful that day.

The game for me was most memorable for the Palace career of Ray Wilkins! (Well, the first 15 mins or so was)

Preece was a funny one. Was it Stockport we bought him from? Came up a league or 2 but was a goalscorer so we hoped he would succeed. He didnt.
