Mike Elwiss
A very gifted player who was limited to around 25 games for us but scored some great goals before getting injured and ultimately retiring while still very young.
Does anyone know what happened to Mike after he retired or what he is up to now? |

Re: Mike Elwiss
Seem to remember when he first arrived from Preston he was very poor and then suddenly hit a purple patch once he'd settled in before getting crocked. He & Kevin Mabbutt could have been Palace greats, if only.

He would have been a 'great'. My memory was of him dancing through tackles. Unfortunately some of the less skilful defenders took his legs out once too often, resulting in him leaving the game far too early. I'd also like to know what happened to him.

Seems Mike is a Preston regular and his daughter is an internatonal hockey player.

Great article - nice to know that he's doing well and doesn't reflect badly on his time at Palace.

Georgia Elwiss the current England Women's Cricketer has just confirmed she is Mike's niece .
Georgia is one of the most approachable person you could ever wish to meet . Last edited by HRP; 23-04-2016 at 10:58 AM. |

Remember seeing him as a kid and my old man swore he scored a header from outside the box against Newcastle when I went for a piss

Although I loved Swindlehurst Elwiss could have been the striker we really needed to move us onto the next level. We had a fantastic defence and midfield in that team but just lacked a top quality striker

He did it was an amazing header on a freezing cold day, think it was from a cross by Fenwick. Quite sure it was played on a near frozen pitch and the ball was bouncing everywhere.

Great player, a shame he had such a bad injury.
Met him at a Player of the year do in 2009 and it was clear he'd enjoyed his time at Palace. He also said how much he'd appreciated the applause from Palace fans when he'd gone onto the pitch at our match away at Preston that season. A very nice man |

Top player but his career was ruined by a serious injury.

Mike Elwiss along with Kevin Mabbutt were wonderful emerging talents for Palace, and just when they were starting to show it, sadly had their career's cut short with injury.

After retiring from football, was in the dairy businessin the Preston area. Through Preston N.E. FC I was able to get in contact with Mike to ask him back for the presentation at the 2009 POTY. He was really pleased and surprised to be asked and I personally was glad he came for all the reasons stated above. A class player and gentleman.
