Two alternative outcomes:

(1) Rodriguez times it wrong and clatters Speroni. Result: booking for Rodriguez.
(2) Speroni times it wrong and clatters Rodriguez. Result: Speroni sent off.

It wasn't a 50/50 ball, the laws of the game deliberately stack the odds in the favour of the attacker. It's no wonder he wasn't strong in the tackle, Jules metaphorically had one hand tied behind his back. In fact, being half-hearted was the only sensible choice he could make. If scenario (2) had come to pass, then we would have had every right to be criticising Speroni, not now.

The goal was a catalyst of several things- we were suddenly turning the screw and gaining territory, but Southampton broke on us, which we halted and broke back. Then they counter attacked our break again - our formation at that point was all over the place. Dann and Delaney were much further up.

Could have done with a point - but I think it was all too easy for them.

Time to move on now.

Punch, Moxey and Jules all should have done better. As Holloway used to say, the majority of goals come from three errors by the opponent.

This thread really is symbolic of the over-analytical ridiculousness of football forums.

The goal was Puncheon's fault. Anyone who has played 90 minutes of football at Sunday league level knows it was Puncheon's fault. Anyone who has simpyl watched 90 minutes of football knows it was Puncheon's fault. An alien who has no concept of football knows it ws Puncheon's fault.

If Moxey had dropped a few yards off Rodriguez or actually got the ball rather than miss it during his tackle, Jules wouldn't have had to come out.

Punch's header was terrible, but a couple of other bad things happened between that and the goal.

Sorry, your post is covered in so much irony I've almost gone blind. "Lets look for a scapegoat - someone new normally fits the bill" was how this thread was first started.

And I very much doubt DL shares that view now - and of course is probably disappointed it has been bumped. Especially as he was one of the few to fortunate to make a modest living from playing the game over the years.

My Saints-supporting colleague at work appreciated the role of Agent Puncheon in the goal.

The strange thing about the goal for me was that I instinctively felt we were in real danger the moment Southampton cleared the ball. I remember saying (with a couple of expletives thrown in) "We need to be careful here" before the ball had even reached Puncheon. It was just the relative positioning of Puncheon, Moxey, Speroni and Rodriguez together with the flight of the clearance that seemed to spell danger.

I haven't seen it again on TV (I rarely see any highlights arfter a defeat like that), but it felt like an accident waiting to happen at the time, which partially absolves Puncheon in my mind.

I was more concerned about the rest of his performance than the error for the goal to be honest.

Agreed, but also then it could be said that Speroni should've been a bit further out of his box. Ultimately though it was Puncheons fault and that's all that matters!

Moxey, taking 1 for the team? By that you mean a red card.

See Sorrondo Vs Horsfield 2005, long way from goal but if Moxey had taken him he was off. Having got to the ball had Speroni cleaned out Rodriquez he would not have been sent off.

Moxey could do little more than he did and what he did forced Rodriguez into what was a heavy touch and should have given Jules teh chance to clear.

There is no doubt the man most culpable is Puncheon but that does not mean that Jules could not have done better.

This is surely wrong. Any foul by Speroni was a guaranteed red.

A little bit of a shitstir post here.

I won't divulge names, but I met someone close to the Club at the weekend. She told me that Julian was pretty upset that the Club haven't made an offer to him re: a new contract.

This is not 'news', as there was an interview or at least some comments from him to this effect posted a few weeks back.

From what I was told though, he was pretty upset, hurt and bemused that no one at the Club has evn bothered to speak to him about it. It appears to me that the Club do so many good things then really let themselves down in key areas like this (see the settling in of Campaña, other contracts being allowed to run down in the past).

I'm sure that SB will justify this oversight by saying the intention is not to offer new contracts until we know what division we are in. But that will have a whiff of bullshit about it - Jedi got his new contract, and the Club seemed to find a substantial sum for Puncheon.

This is a heads up to be honest - get Julian in, have a chat with him, make him feel wanted and appreciated. Chaps been here 10 years, probably the loveliest chap on the squad, and he deserves to be treated with more respect.

Having got to the ball first, once he has won the ball, if he takes the players too its not a foul, going in as he did meant his weight was not behind the ball, more of Rodriguez's was and that is why the ball broke for him. The extra desire and commitment created that goal out of a ball Speroni was favourite for.

Even if he does get sent off, the game would have been very tough with 10 men but we had done a good job of stopping them to that point and did after, and whilst the situation may not have occured 2nd half, if we were down to 10 men, i wonder if Webb sends off Loveren?
