Ah, I see - madness if so. The premier league fantasy football credits him with them. The Watford one in particular was amazing skill and cross which took a slight deflection. If that doesn't count then the whole thing is bonkers. It's another reason to doubt many of Benteke's assists which are stretching the definition.

Yes that is frustrating. It only counts as a 'chance created' or assist if it reaches the intended target without any deflections.

But it is not a reason to disregard stats.

As some people have said, they've felt Wilf step up this year, even if that isn't quite reflected in his goal and assist total.

His amount of shots and chances created per 90 minutes this season are the highest for any of his seasons. Last season people were very clinical off the chances he created - he got 9 assists where on average those chances would lead to 4.5 goals (according to Understat's expected goal model).

This season they've been wasteful - just 1 assist off nearly 3 expected (and that doesnt even include the Jimmy goal). He's also had a lot more goalscoring chances per game this season - has around 5.5 expected goals both this season and last - but played a lot fewer mins so far this year. More clinical again last year though - think of the couple of screamers he scored versus Swansea and Hull for example - very low probability chances.

A lot of the over/underperformance against xG is down to variance/ chance - so doesn't mean Wilf will continue to underperform his numbers.

Anyway, realise this has nothing to do with Sorloth - didnt see the game but sounds like he made a good contribution - 2 shots and 4 chances created away from home is a very promising start. Think he'll continue to play alongside Benteke tbh. 4 dribbles in the game too, looks like he has quite a few strings to his bow! (usually no one other than Wilf or RLC gets close to 4 dribbles per game for us)

Sorry to disagree but stats are only a reflection and prove nothing. We know how good wilf is and how he influences games but people pundits experts will say hes not very good and point to his stas as evidence. Therefire stats are merely numbers proving bery little. I said for years possession stays were meaningless. Now even pundits are beginning to see that....which in a way is worrying.

Even though Benteke got the assist with his goalbound volley that was handled in the box?

Think he will be better wide left for us for the moment. His workrate is superb. He has a left foot and enough stamina to get up and down. And he will be a real threat joining Benteke in the box when PVA overlaps down the left, and even more dangerous when we attack down the right and he can arrive unmarked at the far stick. They won't pick him up, and he will score goals. Plus he will help us massively defensively.

Its not the stats that are meaningless it's the conclusions. The truth is that you can't look at one single stat and understand much about anything. TBH the most powerful thing re stats is their trend rather than their count but that's a longer conversation. Any pundit citing one stat and making an opinion is a poor reflection of the pundit not the stat.

When I am doubtful or confused over the stats of a Palace player I always look at how that stat shows in the other Premier players. i.e. if you assess all Premier League players on that stat - do the players at the top of that list look and feel like they are broadly speaking in the right section. Then look where the player sits in the list. (always filter based on 90 mins and a min of 10 or maybe 15 games). There will always be the odd anomaly but it's unlikely that your fave Palace player will consistently be the odd one out.

Despite the above - just for info, for assists - Wilf is 169th, key passes - he is 39th. (don't ask me to define key passes ) If you come back to club level, Wilf doesn't top any stat at other than the most successful dribbles (and actually the most unsuccessful). I haven't' checked back but I think his stats would have been right up there after his return from injury when he was on fire but they have tailed off as we have seen on the pitch. (last year he finished 39th and 67th respectively).

If you look at the top 20 of those 2 stats across the division there are very few surprises (Chris Brunt possibly).

To the eye I would have said Wilf's purple patch earlier this season was his best ever and he looked worth every plaudit but the 2 injuries and an average period just before his second knock have dented that. He seemed to get very frustrated too.

What remains true for us is that he remains our 'great hope' and we just need that best form back upon his return.

Well I have taken your advice and got a structural engineer to assess my garden wall. He said that due to natural geo-forces and variable seasonal weather there is a potential 1-2mm movement of the wall over the course of time.

However, after further detailed assessments he was completely dumbfounded by the complete lack of movement of Benteke, and could only put it down to being a natural phenomenon.

Should start instead of Fraudteke, but further evidence of a poor transfer window I'm afraid.

He got better as the match went on. he looked a bit lost and out of position when assigned to mark players. He clearly thrives on having to use his speed and running forward, with or without the ball.

Will do well in the championship maybe. Bit like the rest of the signings we made championship standard.

He moved more than Benteke and at least gave the defenders something to think about. But then I probably moved more than Benteke did, and I am stuck in an armchair with a nasty cold.
