Strange Stats on Football Managers with strong Palace connections

Did you know that in the last 3 seasons in the top 5 English football Divisions, including the Prem, there have been thirteen managers with a strong connection to CPFC - as a former Palace player, manager or equally strong connection.

Of these 13 Palace 'Old Boys', no less than SIX have been sacked, in the last 3 seasons.

The List of Shame is (most recent sacking only):

Pardew, Alan - player & manager - WBA
Symons, Kit - player & manager - Fulham
Dickov, Paul - player - Doncaster Rovers
Derry, Shaun - player (Club Captain) - Cambridge Utd
Goldberg, Mark - owner - Bromley
Harrison, Craig - player - Hartlepool

The Survivors are:

Allardyce, Samuel - manager - Everton
Bruce, Steven - manager - Aston Villa
Warnock, Neil - manager - Cardiff City
Pulis, Anthony - manager - Middlesbrough
Holloway, Ian - manager - QPR
Coleman, Chris - player - Sunderland
Fullarton, Jamie - player - FC Halifax Town

We are the only club in the Football League who have an owner who has become a manager and then also been fired.

We are amongst only a handful of clubs in the last 3 seasons who have had players who have also been managers of CPFC - two in fact: Pardew and Symons. (Of course, Taylor before that.)

In total, 5 former Palace players have been managers in the Top 5 Divisions of the Football League in the last 3 seasons.

There are of course dozens of others below manager level, and/or who have retired, and I do not want to ignore their excellent service.

Roy Hodgson used to play for Palace and he's doing alright.

F*ck the rest of them.

What exactly is the point of this thread?
Managers get sacked all the time, and I remember seeing a stat that 1/3 - 1/2 of mangers never get a second job.
All of the Survivors have been sacked at some point in the past.

Kit Symons last managed a game for Palace in 2003, so I don't know how he links into the last 3 seasons alongside Pardew.

Well, it’s a (little) bit interesting. Palace related, so this is the forum for it.

Chris Powell started at palace. Southend boss.
kieth curle was coach here with Colin. Carlisle
Dean Austin player and coach at palace. now manager at Northampton town.

any more?

there's not that many teams really so it's inevitable that a lot of managers will have a connection with us

I guarantee that majority of Championship and Premier League clubs will have a similar type record to us.

And what does this actually mean? What have Kit Symond and Peter Taylor got to do with the last 3 seasons? You missed out Freedman by the way, who was far more recent.

Southgate has not managed us (yet). Newcastle has also had four England managers as club manager (Robson, Keegan, Maclaren and Big Sam).

In the past 3-and-a-bit seasons we've had Warnock, Pardew, Allardyce, de Boer and Hodgson as manager. Between them, they have played for the following "handful of clubs":
Chesterfield
Rotherham United,
Hartlepool United,
Scunthorpe United,
Aldershot,
Barnsley,
York City,
Crewe Alexandra,
Palace,
Charlton,
Spurs,
Barnet,
Bolton Wanderers,
Sunderland,
Millwall,
Tampa Bay Rowdies,
Coventry City,
Huddersfield Town,
Preston North End,
West Bromwich Albion,
Ajax,
Barcelona,
Galatasaray,
Rangers.

Is Palace being on this list really that strange?

I would expect a thread like this during the close season rather than in the final four weeks of a relegation-threatened season.
