If he was constantly making mistakes, I could understand it. But he isn't imo (and I am a goalkeeper myself.)
Basic goalkeeping is not to push the ball out to the centre of the goal when making a save , he constantly does it . So yes he is constantly making mistakes.

That's without being able to kick a goal kick to a member of his team , and surely he was the worst penalty saving record of palace keepers that have played more than a handful of games

Mainly because no ****** ever shows to receive the ball, so he ends up having to lump it into areas and hope that someone will follow the flight of the ball and challenge for it

I think the reason that there's a lot of debate about Speroni is that they aren't "basic errors".

With the exception of the goal we conceded from a corner at Burnley, I can't remember him making an out-and-out mistake. But there have been a fair few occasions where there's just a hint of suspicion that a top keeper - or the Jules of old - would have pulled off a really great save rather than see the ball end up in the net.

Unfortunately, the wonder save count is well down this season, and I think it's this that's telling me that his time is almost up, not "basic errors".

As an aside, it is something I have noticed before, but Jules never really goes for penalties. He always sorts of flops down. You often see keepers even when they go the wrong way, go full length and dive across the goal.
with the exception of the one against Burnley at home this season which he saved you mean?

Speroni's form is poor at the moment. He seems to parry so many shots back towards the middle of the goal. Another disappointing effort for their second goal yesterday.

It's not a one off though, that second goal. It confirms a trend.

There's a lot of guff on this thread about it being time to give WH a try to see what he's capable of. You don't bring in players just to see what they're like when you're in the middle of a relegation battle, and make no mistake we still are.

We brought a new left back in at the deep end, so why not an international keeper.

Still fail to see where jules got anything wrong yesterday. Some of the arguements on here are ridiculous.
He saves a goal bound shot with a solid save diving to his left. Where the **** else is the ball going to go but to his left. You can't arrange your hands in the perfect position to glance a ball wide, you don't have time to do that, and even if you tried, your wrist position would be so weak the ball would go in anyway. Strong wrists were needed to make that save.
Jules done his job, why did our defenders not anticipate the save like giroud did and put themselves in a position to get the ball first, they were nearer.
There are some on the Bbs that want to find a fault with jules on every goal the TEAM let in, even to the extent they make up bollocks to justify it.

There's no harm in acknowledging that Jules hasn't been as good as last year. But to write him off is foolish.

Explain exactly how he should have put that out for a corner? His only other option was to gather the ball, which goalkeeper's nowadays rarely attempt in that situation. If we'd cleared the ball there would probably be a thread about how Julian's brilliant parry kept us in the game.

Speroni's form is bad and how can you say other wise.
He doesn't kick the ball well
He doesn't catch the ball enough
Time for Heno to be given a chance.

He should have caught the ball, the shot had very little pace on it

Thats 4 games in the last 5 hes done exactly the same thing, only Leicester failed to score as a result

Bollocks,
He still makes great saves, not as bad At kicking as some on here try to make out and still worth his place, and I like Hennessy as a keeper as well.

When was his last, 'great save' ie one that you wouldnt expect any half decent keeper to make?

Burnley?

Stupid comment. Keeper is never meant to save a penalty.

We're playing a more open game under Pardew. Which means Speroni or any other keeper is going to be more exposed than last season.

Most of the goals against us could easily have been cut out by defenders.

I repeat, what did he do wrong?

Yes, he has made plenty of saves this year that has kept us in games. I am sorry they have not been spectacular enough for you, however, if he did make one, you would put it down to one for the cameras I suspect.

Posted this on the rating thread earlier, but it's as relevant here…

'Suggest you rematch. He goes down in instalments. Only one place Welbeck can put it in order to score – across the goal – so he has to anticipate this and spread himself that way the instant the shot comes in. And, simply, doesn't. Instead, he drops to has knees and sticks his palms out in a rather limp manner, when he should be using his entire body to block the goal as best he can.

Just taken a pic to illustrate this: he should be filling the screen here, enabling his full torso to smother the ball, not flopping straight downwards with a wrist stuck out.

It was struck exactly where expected, with no great power. I'd expect most keepers at this level to a. get down to the shot faster and b. hold onto it.'

If he had done done that the striker would have lifted it over him easily and scored, yet he didn't because jules made the right decision.
I am happy to blame jules for not collecting crosses etc, but he did nothing wrong yesterday.
