Game management has been a shocker. In 38 games under Pardew in 2016, we conceded within a few minutes of a sub coming on in 16 of them, each time turning a point into nothing or 3 into 1...

whats really scary now is that in the last 2 games we haven't looked like scoring while our defense looks just as shocking. Now with Benteke and Wilf gone I can't see where the hell the goals are going to come from. We look utterly impotent

It all get's dressed up as excuses, doesn't it? Poor referees, someone got injured and had to go off, we were on top until that point, conceding from set pieces isn't like us... and somehow it just carried on...and on.

Ins and Outs -

We sold Jedinak and yet we do not have a replacement midfield enforcer that we desperately need.

We sold Gayle and Murray. Gayle would be a great option alongside Benteke. Murray would have been good back up and influence.

We sold Bolasie. He was always my favourite player despite his end-product. He was exciting, he'd get the ball down the other end in a flash and he was a massive threat which teams had to often double up on. He could also play on the left.

We got Townsend. Excited at the time. Didn't realise how wrong i'd be. Ineffective, looks disinterested. Against Arsenal he looked like he was under orders to play with his back to goal in the first half. Either that or he is simply not as good as people thought. Can't play on the left.

We got Benteke. Was well pleased with this. Always dreamed of a player like tekkers leading the line. BUT - playing with decent crossing wingers or alongside a poacher like Gayle. He gets isolated and isn't massively bothered about defensive responsibilities.

We got Tomkins. Jury is still out. Early enthusiasm has waned. But to be honest, i don't think any of our defenders four have played well for months.

Then you look at the others we've got - Sako (backup at best), Cabaye (massive disappointment, but still unsure what his role is meant to be), Mutch (disaster), Kelly (not a LB), Campbell (enthusiastic but barely Champ level).

Then the huge injury list - Souare (our only LB), Wickham (was hoping he would improve this year), Jimmy Mac (massive loss to the team's drive), Remy (no idea), Mandanda (high hopes, looks like he wants out already), now Benteke our only real goal threat.

Puncheon is not an AM player, and i've been disappointed with him for ages. I'd honestly rather we played Cabaye there and Punch on the wing as cover. Ward is getting exposed regularly against pacey players. Zaha is off for weeks. Ledley was never a first team player. Chungy looked like he cared against Arsenal - should get a chance soon i reckon, but how far can he go? Flamini - legs have gone.

I had optimism. It has been slowly eroded to pessimism. I can't see how the current squad will escape relegation i'm afraid, it looks paper thin.

I'd say we need improvement in -

LB
RB
Possibly still CB
DM
CM
LW
RW
CF

Scary thought isn't it.
This is exactly right. Except we 100% need a centre back, possibly even two. And we also need a goalkeeper. An absolute balls up by previous manager, and by association, our well intentioned, but on this occasion, rather naive board of directors.

Ithink what the Vicar is trying to say, we previously had a problem scoring, we no longer do (or until BFS started anyway), however, the defensive side of things has gone to pot. Too many errors caused initially by not having a back up left back to Soare, hence everybody playing out of position. (As much, if not more, Parish's mistake rather than Pardew)
But hey Soare's accident must also have been Pardews fault.

We didn't bring in enough quality players and Pardew and Parish gambled on the squad being fit throughout the season. Everyone could tell that we were short in key areas and nothing was done about it. Failing to find the right players in the right positions also hurt us badly.

I'm not mourning the sales of Gayle and Jedinak, because they aren't premiership players, but they should have been replaced.

Pardew - player recruitment since the window of 2014 has been singularly awful. In fact beyond awful, can not think of a word to describe it.

Not one player purchased or loaned has improved the team as far as I can recall. We finshed that season with a better side than we have now.

Other than Wilf no players with any ambition. Seriously what member of the squad other than Wilf can better themselves? The whole of the squad is closer to 30 than 20 have no international expectations so are just comfortable collecting their wages.

George Graham once said never sign players who would appear to be taking a downward step as it won't take lon before they think they are doing you a favour. I think it is fair to say Cabaye,Flamini,Townsend,Manadana ALL fit this

We are desperate for some youthful ambition and enthusiasm along with a proper leader.

I don't buy that we were going to get relegated with him in charge. Yes loosing Souare was bad but we had him in the period when the rot began this time last year. What we are harvesting now is the total mismanagement of the squad, every aspect of it in 2016. What's more we now have more players missing due to internationals and injury. No full backs, no strikers and no wingers.

Remind me, when did we sign George Graham? It's a Palace tradition.

The board have a history of buying cheap and IMO our luck has finally run out. The squad isn't good enough due to negligence.

There are many valid points being made but one very very simple one was not getting good at defending set pieces and also not being good at not giving away needless fouls near the box or corners.

The number of goals from set pieces this season must be up to 15 or 16, pretty well a goal a game and yesterday and at watford points were squandered. Virtually every game we've played the match has turned on a humble corner or free kick not being defended properly.

When Pardew arrived he openly said he left it to the players who had been well schooled in the school of Pulis how to be good at defending set pieces and to be lethal from them.

The first thing is to have a big side, the second to have full backs good in the air ala Mariappa, large defensive midfielders ala Jedi and good in the air number 10's and 11's ala Jerome and Chamakh. Under Pulis the whole side was good in the air apart from Bolassie and Punch.

Wind the clock on and we've replaced tall players with pint sized ones and inexplicably one of our tall centre backs in Tomkins seems a complete liability from a set piece right from his opening few minutes away to Tottenham. Coupled with the no holding rule and the Pardew still leaving it up to the players we've looked like conceding from virtually every free kick and corner we've conceded all season

Game after game has been decided on them. Both Swansea games were decided by them, we were 1-0 up a cruising at their place when Punch gave away a totally unnecessary free kick to Siggardson and the rest is history. Yesterday one silly Cabaye foul and we can't defend a set piece again.

We need some height and we might just find we can be a threat again at the other end too. We do have in Wilf the most fouled player in the league and plenty of set pieces of our own as a result but ultimately we've got to get good at not conceding from them, its killing us.
