Republic of Ireland Squad

Do Ireland still take any player with at least one grand-parent born in Ireland? If so why is their current squad so weak, compared to in days gone by?
I thought millions of the UK population qualified, but the squad features more league one players than premier league players in midfield / attack.
Quite a strong defence mind you.

Goalkeepers: Colin Doyle (Hearts), Sean McDermott (Kristiansund BK), Darren Randolph (Middlesbrough)

Defenders: Seamus Coleman (Everton), Cyrus Christie (Fulham), Matt Doherty (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Shane Duffy (Brighton & Hove Albion), Richard Keogh (Derby County), Ciaran Clark (Newcastle United), Kevin Long (Burnley), John Egan, Enda Stevens (Sheffield United)

Midfielders: Alan Judge (Brentford), Jeff Hendrick (Burnley), Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa), Shaun Williams (Millwall), David Meyler (Reading), Daryl Horgan (Hibernian), Callum O'Dowda (Bristol City)

Forwards: Graham Burke, Callum Robinson (Preston North End), Aiden O'Brien (Millwall), Ronan Cutis (Portsmouth)

Good thread.

The one one grand-parent rule applies to every nation equally, so yes it includes Ireland.

There are still some Britain raised players who make the current squads, plus a couple of Derry ones.

I'll guess at why the squads are pretty weak these days:
* random chance - a small nation will always have periods where there's just not enough talent.
* English leagues & foreigners - much smaller pool of British Isles players play in the top 2 English divisions than 20 years ago. Even England are effected by this issue.
* Roy Keane - his famous outbursts and the ilk who follow him are pretty off-putting to would be plastic paddies, especially now that he's assistant manager.
* The Dublin-centric Irish youth sides, makes it tough for teenagers not from the Dublin/Pale area to be involved in the set-up.
* The FAI - enough said really

Some interesting points Cockles.

The 'Keane' factor must come into play as you say. Didn't Keane's infamous rant at Mick McCarthy in the 2002 World Cup include the accusation that McCarthy wasn't 'properly Irish'.

There's a few notable absences from that squad, mainly Robbie Brady, James McClean & Shane Long, but I get your point. It's the weakest Irish national side for years. We've always punched above our weight with a team of sloggers containing one, or a couple of, very decent players. Apart from Coleman, we don't have that at the moment.

Soccerball used to attract some of the best GAA players on the island, but they now seem to be more drawn to rugby which is making big strides all the time, or the AFL. A recent GAA --> soccerball player is Evan Murphy. He's left Galway's Gaelic Football panel to play for Galway United.

I think cockles has pretty much got it spot on with his list. With the FAI making the FA look competent being one of the major factors in my opinion.

Rugby & Football are always battling it out for 3rd place on the list of favourite sports for the Irish (Gaelic Football & Hurling are the bedrock of sports in the country) but rugby, buoyed by the recent success of the national team has stolen a march on football that will take some serious work to claw it back.

Really good point about the Rugby Union, which has become a professional sport in the past 25 years too. That and the GAA getting their act together even more.
Also what none of us has mentioned is what a draw Jack Charlton was back in the day. I wonder did anyone he'd approached ever turn him down.

I think I'll repeat *Roy Keane. Can't be said enough. He didn't really restrict his "not even f***ing Irish" to Mick McCarthy, he was alienating his fellow players (for whom he was 'Captain'), including the rest of the midfield four: Holland, Kilbane & McAteer. Clinton has spoken about that on some Podcasts. Dean Kiely was in that squad too. Would love to ask him about that.

The thing is with Ireland, not to expect much, because even if we do have a Paul McGrath generation, FIFA can be relied on to shaft us out of major tournaments anyway.

When is the last time we had any yound Irish kids at Palace? Man U and Arsenal always used to have some very decent Irish players but not any more. As SC says Seamus Colman is the only real player with the pedigree of the past and he is coming into the last few years of his career. Same for Scotland these days while the Welsh seem to have several young players with real potential. Depressing prospects of getting to a final in the near future.

I'm on the dog so can't reply with quotes etc. Firstly, cockles, Zinedine Kilbane should not be on your list. For all his many faults, the man is Irish. No doubt with him & bollocks where he was born.

And Irish kids at Palace; Kian Flanagan. He's represented us underage, hopefully he comes good (for Palace first & foremost) & doesn't do a Grealish/potentially Rice*.

And finally yes, Roy Keane is a div. "Stick it up your bollocks you engerlish c***" to Mick McCarthy? McCarthy was class for Ireland from Irish stock. His name is a clue. Keane is a clown.

(*First you stole our potatoes, now you're taking our Rice)

I saw a combined Irish team play against one of the greatest Brazil teams ever with the likes of Paddy Mulligan and the Doug (the real one) losing 3-4 at Landsdown Road. Insane it happens with Rugby and no one gives a damn about religion or North and South. There doesn’t seem to be a will for it from the two federations because of their own jobs. The match I saw was initiated by the players and was a Shamrock Rovers 11. Noisiest match I have ever been part of.

That's interesting. They would have been far stronger over the years.

Odd that Rugby went for one team and football 2.

As Mick said recently, "there's those born in Ireland and then there's Irishmen."

How do the Irish see Roy Keane? Pretty sure he was idolised around 2000/2001 when he was at his peak etc

Keane is idolised in his native County Cork. The rest of the country is probably split with the Man Utd bar stoolers loving him, the Liverpool bar stoolers not so much. He was a great player and produced some excellent performances in a green shirt, but I can't forgive him for Saipan when he abandoned his country. So f*** him.

Or Clive Clark another Corkonian who Keane released from Sunderland. While on loan with someone who I can't remember he suffered three heart attacks during the interval. Don't think he ever played again.
Keanes comment was " I didn't know he had a heart."

It's conveniently forgotten that he also used a feeble excuse to get out of an important play-off game in Tehran against Iran.
