Surely you still employ the best candidate at the end of any HR friendly policy?

Of course. It's an opportunity for them to be interviewed, it doesn't guarantee the job.

This was discussed at length on a previous thread about black managers. The point there (after many many pages of rows) was that whilst the number of BAME going through the coaching courses was in line with what we would expect, the numbers getying jobs was not, so something was up that clubs were not necessarily employing the best candidates. And as the Rooney rule has be shown to have a positive effect in the NFL (?) then something similar should be introduced here.

Sol Campbell hasnt got any jobs, but neither has Ryan Giggs. Both think they can walk into management. It's a shame Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink wasn't a success at QPR, because I loved his attitude, when asked about being a 'Black Manager' in football, he said he only wants to be know as a manager, that his race was irrelevant. When we get to that point we will have progressed as a society, maybe we have to go through some processes to get there and ruffle up afew old institutional feathers on the way.

Ultimately this guarantees interviews for a section of minorities which I guess is only a good thing, but only the best candidate will be given the job hopefully. Th FA are obviously trying to steer towards a positive PR organisation after what happened with the ladies team (I don't think Mark Sampson was racist, a bloody thick fool yes) but at Palace I believe we have employed people for their ability rather than any PR move. Richard Shaw for example looks an excellent coach, Darren Powell was one of my favourite players so I am pleased to see him back at the club (I remember his interview in the programme, there was a section which asked what you were likely to do on a Saturday night, most players would be saying going to the club, Powell said he liked staying in reading a book... respect!) Also Steven Reid has just come in and could be groomed to be manager after Hodgson leaves. Regardless I don't even think about think about their race until articles like this make me think about these things, wouldn't it be better to let the cream rise to the top and race be irrelevant, as I said earlier maybe these are steps that need to be taken to get to that point.

Sometimes in the Premier League, the next manager is quietly lined up behind the scenes before the old one is even sacked. Can't imagine any prospective Black manager would want to waste their time being interviewed for box ticking tokenism reasons when the job is already a 'done deal' for someone.

How can giving someone a job interview based on the colour of their skin not be considered racist?

This happens in the NFL too. (See Jon Gruden at the Raiders). You can just pay a fine.

Does this mean at least one ginger must be interviewed too? Only it's identical genetics, only gingers get far more stick these days

What about coaches from Turkmenistan, they are terribly unrepresented in the Premier League, I really hope steps are made so we can have Turkmen folk on every coaching team.

We not allowed to talk about this again even though it made news today? We should look up the other thread as reference and leave it at that?

You'll be pleased to hear that Turkmens are Asian, so the Fa's decision will only help with your dream.

so I take it nobody actually bothered to read the story, given every post complaining about the rule in this thread has completley got the rule wrong.

Crap rule and is patronising to black people. The best candidate (in the opinion of the decision maker) will get the job, this rule does not change that. It’s just they will now have to interview a token BME who will have no chance but will tick the box.
