Remember the QPR game. Wasn't their keeper given all kinds of abuse from the Whitehorse Lane in the 2nd half? Think he was time wasting and feigning injury. Looked like he got angry with the crowd and needed stewards and police to get him off the field.

Agree with the poster about the Liverpool game. After that Smith went ultra defensive and it took away our attacking threat and confidence resulting in a 10 game goaless run over xmas and new year.

Armstrong lost confidence and erm went off the rails a bit. The cup runs were a welcome distraction but once we had been punted out of both semis minus Nige the writing was on the wall.

I ended up going to Leeds and Newcastle away which were the last 2 games of the season with the writing well and truly on the wall. Everyone knew Smith was gone regardless if we stayed up or not. One shcking decision that sticks out was him playing Chris Coleman against Forest despite him having dislocated his shoulder in a game or 2 before meaning he was probably less than 50% fit. Watching Collymore roast him in a must win game for us was painful.

The signings of Paterson and Preece were huge errors of judgement and made the previous seasons side much, much weaker. Only Pitcher later won the fans over despite a horrendus start when he was shifted to centre mid.

Another what if season - Typical Palace!

Yeah..They were mates from Wrexham I believe. Preece scored a couple of screamers in the league cup run but wasn't much cop in the league..

We shoulda tried harder to sign Kennet Andersson who we wanted before the '94 world cup when he really impressed for Sweden..

Think he scored a couple of crackers at Coventry if memory serves. Same game Newman scored a blinder too, but that was as good as it got!

Another game I remember is the 0-0 at Anfield. Smith changed to 3-6-1 that day (I think, may have been 2 up top) and I didn't move from the TV and nearly made the family miss a flight!

Pitcher was an infamous choice at right back. Mcmananan completely destroyed him.

We were reputed to be interested in signing Swedish international Kennet Anderssen; but instead Uncle Ron's present to Alan was Mr Preece.

The third goal was horrendous play by Pitcher misreading the flight of the ball, which fell into the path of Fowler who did what he did best.
Smith seemed to like playing midfielder's at full back against Liverpool - Wayne Carlise being another example.

BTW: Preece had a real purple patch in October/Early November with goals against Everton, Leicester, Coventry, from memory. Not the most gifted and pretty one dimensional, but a trier but visibly short of quality in the Premier.

Noades had promised Paul Stewart & Liverpool (that he would get a permanent deal if he got us up) did it materialise.....hell no.......he saved 600k & opted for an unproven striker from Stockport.
Despite being a decent striker, Armstrong always looked a better striker alongside someone who had a physical presences about them Stewart/Dowie being two examples.

All summer we'd be touted as buying Kennett Anderson from the Swedish World Cup semi finalists. We went from him to Andy Preece in no time at all. Was there no middle ground!?

I thought that Preece was partly signed because he was Armstrong's best friend and it was an attempt to keep him settled at a time when a few bigger clubs were sniffing about.

Gotta agree with PK though. As a footnote to Palace being great that season, to see Salako play up top, score 3 on a pissing wet day and finally have something since his injury (which at that time would often end careers) to remember was worth the wait.
Didn't Armstrong get Orpington pissheads player of the year , was that the season he came down the pub to help us raise cash for our injured keeper? He was going to "pop in" and iircc got a cab home as he stayed for ages and had few beers?. Remember he pissed off the millwall lot( good bunch honest!) in the pub that night
