first time I've commuted to London for over 4 years. I used to drive to Purley and get on the trains from Caterham/Tattenham Corner but now they are rammed from Whyteleafe despite being 25% longer. Weird

I'm surprised there hasn't been any mention of the landslide just north of Oxted.

Not really Southern's fault, and they seem to be managing it pretty well now(Although this morning was a shambles); at one point, one of the members of staff openly admitted to me that "One of the trains has disappeared off the map and we are not 100% sure where it is!".

To get get to Oxted & beyond tonight home, you need to go to Redhill or Three Bridges if you just need to get to East Grinstead & get a bus replacement. And there is a whisper doing the rounds that it might be like this for the rest of the week

Unfortunately a landslide is quite a lot of work. No idea how bad it is but the one at Ockley took 6 weeks to fix.

Blimey.

Would cause utter carnage if the line got closed for more than a few days, let alone a month!

I don't know the area or the damage so can't really be specific. But they tend to be quite bad. The sea wall has fallen away in Dawlish (as I mentioned yesterday) and no trains can get through at all. With the weather as it is NR can't even begin to start repairs until it is safe to do so.

Can't get a seat on the Tattenham train at Woodmansterne any more. For once it isn't Southern's fault; it's because Croydon Council are trying to turn that part of their borough into a ghetto by putting flats on any spare bit of land available.

One thing I've never understood, and still can't after being ivited as part of the public audience in a debate with First Capital Connect management last year, is why FCC can be allowed to run trains through Southern and Southeastern stations and not have any staff of their own there.

There have been countless times when the passangers for an FCC train are left completely in the dark and the southern/SE platform staff have to scrap around and phone an FCC station to get info. Its ridiculous

FCC seem to enjoy using other TOCs stations, they also use Wimbledon, a SWT station.

As for Dawlish, that's 6 weeks if the weather holds off.

FCC seem a very strange company, last year 1 in 6 of their trains was driven by a driver on overtime, what happens if they can't convince drivers to work their rest days??? also working Sunday's is optional, what happens if staff decide not to? seems a crazy way to run a service.

I would hardly call this part of Coulsdon a getto, plus which train do you use plenty of seats onboth the 7.31 and 8.01 to Victoria the only one that is really full is that the 7.47 and it's full of Whitgift toffs

That happened To view the link you have to Register or Login - they couldn't get enough staff on roster and had to cancel loads of trains.

In fairness to Southern the 7 50 from Coulsdon South to London Bridge runs fairly well. It is 99% standing room only when I get on but that is the over populated South East in general for you. By the way it gets to East Croydon it is inhumane however.

There has been a huge increase in rail travel in the past decade - I've no idea how much the train companies can take the credit/blame for that.

It just gets busier and busier in the week , weekends are following the same pattern as well .
Trains can and often lose time loading and unloading passengers due to overcrowding . I can't see how the TOCs can keep up if the numbers traveling continue to grow at this pace without new suburban lines being built .

Landslide at Oxted has been confirmed as leaving the line out of action for at least this week.

If you need to get to East Grinstead you have to get a train to Three Bridges from London, then a bus replacement service from there across to East Grinstead. You can alternatively go to Redhill (I wouldn't) and get a bus to Oxted (I wouldn't) then a train to East Grinstead.

Only problem is Three Bridges flooded last time there was really bad weather, so that could be out of action. My wife is crazily busy at the moment. First train in the morning, last train at night. She may have to stay up in London a few nights.

Seriously, any other time of the year and she'd work from home. But December to March/April is her mental time at work. Stupid amounts of hours and stress.
