No, yet you claim that communism was worse than what they have now. This is the kind of political thought that dominated the thirties. Instead of pining for Il Duce's March on Rome you could sponsor me on my charity walk around the yorkshire dales! (See link below).

By implication, you disagree with that?

As Dave points out, oil money was spent, privatisation money was spent, council house money was spent and yet economic growth was lower in the 1980s than the 1970s.

Performed pretty well in the next twenty years? Unemployment never fell below its 1970s peak and its end was met with government borrowing and inequality at levels not seen since the war and standards of living falling every year.

That's how I see it!

As in corruption.

I am professionally very well acquainted with the fact that financial crime happens in the U.K.!

Do you really beleive there is less corruption in government today than there was in Britain's only ever communist government (i.e. 1945-51)?

What's that got to do with anything?

Ex-Soviet Bloc countries are much more corrupt than we are now, however.

Which post are you referring to? 81? The intention there is to compare the wealth of communist countries then with the West then. I thought that was obvious, but if it's not I ask your apology for sloppy writing.

However, if the best you can manage is to criticise the implication of the post, that would suggest that at worst it is ambiguous, and as such I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Your writing is never sloppy DM, but always creative, often allowing, as in this case, points to be interpreted by the reader from a number of different view points. How dull, if we all just wrote in absolute terms, writing exactly what we meant and sticking to it.
I thank you for graciously acknowledging your ambiguity and in turn, equally graciously I hope, give you the benefit of the doubt requested.

To claim the ex-Soviet bloc is the model of communism is akin to claiming that present day Russia is the model of capitalism.
