BBC harassment survey

Head above the parapet here. While it is terrible that people are victims of sexula assaults and rapes, I thought the other classifications showed the general workplace situation to be pretty good overall.

Unwanted message with sexual material - 6%

Porn in the workplace - 8%

Cat calls/wolf whistles - 20%

Unwelcome jokes - 30%

The BBC make it out to be a testament to poor behaviour in the workplace. I see it as a vast improvement. Human beings are sexual creatures, and especially if you are single the workplace may be one of the only places you get to meet other people. Plus, it doesnt define whether these occurances happened in a workplace environment or in a social work environment.

I would also question the unwanted element. Flirting - I have been actively involved in what I thought was harmless flirting from both sides (back in the day). Some of it over the line, by todays standards. It was a grey area for me. And something that could be stopped by a stern word.

I would say that while nothing came of these office encounters, four or five of the young women in question still remain good friends of mine that I am in regular contact. At least one I visit still has an undercurrent of frustrated sexual energy.

I may have muddled or 52 year old mysogynist thinking, and it is excellent that some of the terrible behaviour is coming to light. But, to me, this seems to be more of an issue of people in positions of power and influence abusing that power rather than something that can be levelled across society in general.

For years, we have seen the cliche of building site workers calling out to women in their summer frocks, but the survey seems to suggest the reality is something like 20%, the same statistic as the BBSes favourite statistic.

Thoughts?

Different world nowadays....You have to get things in writing before you even consider something outrageous as flirting.

Difficult issue to define in words and would hate to see the fun of human interaction regulated by the miserable.

It is generally clear when a line is crossed. That said, women need to be far more confident that they can get immediate support if someone does cross a line. That confidence comes from management setting the right environment.

Trouble is most serious issues at work comes (as do most problems in the world) from the inadequate being in a position of power and abusing that power.

No surprise then that those in the most vulnerable positions receive the most abuse...

Perhaps we should better regulate power structures and then we might we have better environments to live and work in
