Packed terrace. So close to a charged packed Selhurst for a replay. Only two of the mass exodus the previous year remained, but crucially including Allen who did his very best to start the riot that followed - on the pitch: people trying to set fire to the astroturf with lighters (!) and on the streets around Loftus Rd after.
Went to that years' final replay 'gainst Spuz (just turned up at the ground & got one) with a qpr supporter from school. It was all well worth it to see him blubb like a baby at the end!

I couldn't agree more! I think JB's effort is the first goal but before seeing this video, like you, I'd never seen a JB goal in palace colours. A Great find!

I remember the Palace v Portsmouth cup tie. The first goal was Johnny Byrne's, Portsmouth appealed for hand ball by Dennis Uphill who pushed the ball forward to number 8 Johnny Byrne. Certainly a great video find. Well Done!

30,000 folk for a 1st Round tie and we were in the 4th Division!

What a great clip. Obviously no one worried about bookings in those days ,none of the Pompey players had a number on their shirt. Did you note the lack of emotion when we scored , a hand shake and on with the game.

1961 - the year I was born...and I thought I was born in "modern times". Great to see the footage and, as others have mentioned, the players' nonchalant attitude towards celebrating.
As an aside - looks like we had the same goalposts/stanchion all the way through the early 90's. What was unique about them was the angle of the stanchion looked so awkward (not a perpendicular 90 degrees). They seemed to be set badly and consequently we needed those tension cables anchoring them to the ground. Never saw another club with that design. It didn't bother me when watching regularly (1974 to 1988) but always looks a bit "rink -e-dink" now.

I really like that away palace shirt but don't remember it, though I did the home kit of course! My memory is pretty awful i'm afraid

Really enjoyed watching that. Couple of thoughts:
Swindlehurst was/is probably under rated isn't he? A victim perhaps of playing for Palace instead of one of the traditionally 'bigger clubs'. Sansom - wonderful to see footage of him playing for us. All too short (his time with us - not Sansom) but wonderful player who still probably ranks as the most impressive England debut I have ever seen. That was a good Spurs side and we competed well albeit with similar tactics today - in defend deep and attack on the break. Deep then was a little shallower but same principal.

Great to see the highlights, many thanks Aidan (good to see you Saturday by the way).
Swindle got us of jail that day didn't he. And a great clearance off the line by Doris. Hard to believe that was a second division match |

We should have won. We were all over them - Swindle had a perfectly good goal disallowed - for his hat-trick.
And Rachid could/should have won it for us. Peter Taylor still playing great - before he faded.

That brings back a few memories !
Funny thing was that the team that went up next season (so called team of the 80s) really wasn't that different - I think John Burridge was signed later in the season and replaced Tony Burns and the likes of Jerry Murphy, Billy Gilbert and Peter Nicholas got regular games towards the end of the 77/78 season. It was a bit of a struggle for Palace as the season came to a close, as they meandered in mid table, but Venables knew what he was doing, as he was giving all the youngsters vital match experience. And then the very last game of the campaign, it all came to together as we whacked Blackburn (in the top 6) 5-0. I remember that my Dad was very confident about 78/79 and he was convinced we would go up! And to think in those days, we all thought Venables was god!! |

Dreadful quality, but worth a watch for the fact that the game went ahead, and Colemans goal

I love this thread. OK this isn't featuring Palace colours BUT it is a grade A moment for a Palace player. For those old enough (ahem, like me) to remember Alan Whittle how about this of him scoring 1) in the Merseyside derby 2) at Liverpool too and 3) in Everton's title winning year. Hardly memorable for him then. Ofcourse at this time he had no idea that his career would soar even further by pulling on that famous Eagles shirt.

Whittle again, same season, I mean, what a goal, does this remind you of anybody that played for us on Whittle's debut?? Nice pass to him from Bobby Moore, pre Pele tackle.

There is much more Palace (and Alan Whittle) footage to be found on Youtube.
Would post the links if I wasn't bound by the 15 posts rule. |
