PVA with some fresh legs from half time gave us some impetus. Schlupp improved having someone down the line for him. McArthur improved and when Sako came on he turned the game right in out favour with powerful runs and strength.

Probably just as well we played them 48 hours after city, to have played them properly fresh and rested just would not have been fair to them!

Sako for me even though he wasn't on long gave us a real spark we were lacking.

Great energy, strength and invention not frightened to have a go.

Some good defensive performances from Tomkins, Kelly and Hennessey.

A long time but even then it was a cooly placed shot. We haven't had a speculative shot at goal from 20 yards go in for years!

Townsend scored from 20 yards plus against Stoke last season.

Or how about CYL against Stoke when we were 5th at Xmas two years ago?

Punch versus Norwich. Compared to other teams it does seem like slim pickings though.

Just got in - still buzzing - Jimmy Mac kept us in it first half with his energy so motm for me.

Stormy weather but well worth the trip.

He is not actually a miracle worker. There is not Mutch (intended spelling) you can do about him.

I just rewatched the game and the condition of the pitch was a disgrace for a premier league club of Soton's status, it affected both teams, but I feel our style of moving the ball quickly was impeded more than Soton's, on top of that the players looked knackered from the start and it wasn't until about the 3oth minute that we started to get to grips with everything and I feel that from then on we were the better team. When Sako came on he seemed to breathe life into the team and suddenly the front 3/4 were moving quicker. 4 points from 3 tough Christmas games is a nice little present.

Hennessey 6 - not a lot to do, but dealt well when needed.
TFM 6 - work hard all game
Shlupp 6 - struggled for much of the game
Tomkins 8 - another assured performance at the back, a rock.
Kelly 6 - did okay, but without JT next to him he would be in serious trouble.
Luka 7 - worked hard and scored a screamer of a goal
McArther 8 - MoM. Ran his socks off and scored the vital equalizer.
Cabaye 5 - look tired and got some heavy attention from the Southampton players that mostly went unpunished.
Townsend 8 - worked really hard defensively and offensively and provided the cross which led to the first goal and the pass for the second.
Benteke 6 - worked hard, but not his best game.
Wilf 7 - looked most likely to create something, but the conditions and probably fatigue made him look a yard slower than normal

Subs
PvA 6 - came on and again did well.
Sako 7 - Worked hard and breathed life into the other players. Quite amazing to see how the others players upped their game when he came on.

Roy - 8 First half tactics and formation didn't work, but he turned it around like he has done in so many other games this season

Well that was an enjoyable trip!

Took just 2 hours to travel there, lots of food options in town to choose from and then an easy walk to the ground. Friendly, polite stewards, efficient security check that was well organised and a ‘light’ police presence. All good off the pitch and I didn’t see any issues at all.

We were so sluggish at the start of the match, but I didn’t feel we were out of it at half-time as we’re often better second half and Southampton hadn’t been that great.

We improved as the second half went by, and eventually Sako was brought on (personally I’d have subbed him on sooner as he’s on good form). He brings fresh tempo that seems to lift the whole team. In the end we deserved the points, as Southampton faded and their subs made no difference.

Great strike by Luca, and his face was a picture of joy as he celebrated in front of us. I’ve given him MoM for that, and the huge effort he contributed, especially considering his recent workload. Tomkins was best defender this time, and Sako was my ‘Sub of the Match’.

I hope all the Palace fans are now safely home. The drive back was a bit hairy at times in the storm, especially on an exposed part of the M3 where lakes of water were swirling around and all we could see ahead were the hazard lights of the next car. We couldn’t see the road at all. Thanks to those around us driving sensibly and calmly until we’d all passed through into quieter conditions.

One of those occasions when you know you’re going to drive more slowly and carefully, but it only takes one idiot to race through and lose control, and then we’re all in danger.

TFM 5 Below par

Zaha 8 A constant threat
Cabaye 4 Awful further forward
Milivojevic 7 Ok, but gets an extra point for the winner
McArthur 7 Brilliant finish, I felt he was poor (5) in the first half and sublime in the 2nd half (9)
Townsend 7 Great engine throughout. Another assist.

Benteke 8 MOM Worked his arse off, even tracking back in the full back position. Shots on target, held it up well, clever header for equaliser.

Subs:

PVA 7 pressed very hard from left mid. That was the start of swinging the game back to us.
Sako 8 Deserves to start the next one. Worked so hard. So hard. And he has pace and strength. Probably the fittest he's ever been in his life. Roy has done wonders with him.

Hodgson's first half effort of 4-5-1 was a big mistake. It was a very poor Southampton team we were playing, not a record-breaking champions elect side like Man City. We gave them far too much respect. When we switched to 4-4-2 the passing was less ponderous and we gradually got in the game. Subs swung it. Benteke and Zaha are a real handful as a strikeforce. Onwards and upwards. No more 4-5-1 please Roy.
Kelly 5 !! Wake up and watch the game.

Was grim on the M3. Funnily enough we were in a queue of traffic with hazards on all driving around 40/50 mph during the worst bit and a rather flash car in the outside lane was slowly edging past everyone (probably driving just a bit faster than everyone else so hardly speeding). My daughter pointed the car out and I noticed the number plate (CEO 4 TAG )

Watching the highlights reel again and right from Kelly's clearance towards Benteke. CB was sharp to get to the ball first and hold off the defender while turning and laying it off to Wilf before spinning away taking the defender with him. Wilf composed did a neat shuffle, holding the ball before spraying it wide to Andros sitting deep and wide in space. Andros carried it quickly forward with a lot of movement in front of him he picked out the channel run from Sako who took defenders with him but intelligently played it back to Andros early. Andros with everything in front of him picked a simple ball to Luka who was right up with play and unmarked 20+ yards out but with a lot to do still albeit without a DM etc in sight. He just hit it first time, firmly but with accuracy and it curled beautifully into the corner with McCarthy stranded.

Where their midfield had gone, nobody knows but who cares. The space Andros and Luka had was criminal. A thing of beauty in a fairly awful match on an awful pitch. Very much out of place. Even the celebration was amazing
