We had 1 real chance. Benteke's header. We had over 10 corners and countless free kicks and bar the one header from CB, the rest were piss poor at best. What the **** has the team been doing all summer?

Zaha 1 on 1? Dann blasting over from 6 yards? Benteke missing the ball from townsends cut back? They were 3 very very good chances.. then you have Benteke header which was saved and the couple of times zaha should of shot but took extra touch.

We created chances.. just defended like a pub team

No easy games in the Premier League so nothing compared to 0-4 home defeat to Scunthorpe for me.

This was my initial thought.

A dreadful start to a season filled with hopefulness and confidence.

I think it's the same every season, we are notorious slow starters. It's like when you're back at school after the summer holz, you've forgotten how to write properly. The main difference here is that no school kid was ever paid 50G's a week for double maths! At times it looked like we'd forgotten how to play football. So let's give the team a few games to remember how to play and maybe fdb some time to adapt his way of thinking. I'm going to Swansea game ont 26th. And after Anfield away it'll be interesting to see where we are... I honestly think that we are in for another long hard season/could be this years Sunderland. Thought that though even before phat Sam left.

Wimbeldoon February 98' deserves a mention as does Watford in the play off's, but Sunderland last season will still take some beating.

The main problem with the result is the potential knock on affect it could have on the morale of the players. Everton are already sniffing around Benteke, likewise Spurs with Zaha and the problem now is those players already know they are going to be in another struggle this season.

Losing either of those players would make it one of our worst ever defeats.

Lost 1-0 at home to Watford in November 62. Me as a nine year old watching my team lose at home for the first time was devastated beyond belief.
Now after 55 years of following Palace, shock defeats are no shock at all. This is Palace and partly why we love the club so much.

I don't think yesterday is anywhere near as bad as that. First game in red and blue and favourites to go up!! Hopefully yesterday proves to be another Bristol City and the missing players to complete the puzzle are quickly recruited?

This is the correct answer - at least for those who were there.

To add context, Palace had just been relegated with a decent squad and Notts County had just been promoted from Division Three.

Allison had proclaimed that we would be going straight back up, and had widened the pitch to accommodate our dangerous wingers.

We went 1-0 up and all looked perfect.

Except we lost 1-4 and were relegated for a second year in succession at the end of the Season.

There were parallels with yesterday, but for disappointment and disillusion on the opening day, the match against County on 25 August 1973 takes the star prize.

The pitch was quietly narrowed before Christmas.

Long before my time but I have always found it strange how revered Allison was given that he got us relegated from the second tier, doubt he would have kept his job today.

Back on topic, Sunderland at home last season was undoubtedly the worst. But yesterday comes in the top five. If we carry on playing like that then I fear there may be some more contenders.

The Notts County game above sounds exactly like the Luton game? We had just been relegated and Luton had just been promoted?

Good point.

What worried me about yesterday was not only how disorganised we looked, but how even if the players really did get what they were meant to be doing, it was real square pegs in round holes.

Ward is not a wing back, Zaha needs to get the ball far more and play wider, Benteke thrives on crosses yet we put hardly any in at all, several of our players cannot pass and control the ball at the speed required. There's many more issues too but I can't be arsed to list them all here.

I'm happy to give it some time, but with the current team we have (who towards the end of last season looked impressive) I just don't think these tactics will ever work.
